The problem with G5 is that it killed the underdog narrative. It was already dead enough with Luffy's father and grandpa but at least he wasn't the chosen child of the prophecy bullshit until G5. I hated thay shit in Naruto and I dislike it here (because at least there is no talk no jutsu or total BS).
I can understand that G5 can't be everyone's cup of tea and oda himself said it - some fans might not like it.
But yeah - it's not ruining anything. Neither it ruined kaido fight nor one piece.

Take a look at the final round of those fights and see how it compares to Gear 5. Luffy is almost never smiling let alone laughs in any of them because it is meant to be the most serious stage of the fight. He knows when to get down to business and not ask the oppressor if they’re having fun.
Gear 5 tosses that completely on its head, erasing any modicum of tension (the Kaido fight was already drawn out to hell, so there’s that too).
It doesn’t suit Luffy’s personality at all given all the history we have from him.
Whether Crocodile, Enel, Lucci, Moria, Doflamingo, or Katakuri, you can count how many times Luffy smiled or laughed in the final fight on 1 hand. IRC, it’s twice: once to mock Crocodile and once to reassure Katakuri

Yes, Gear 5 is a disappointment. The good points are superficial or expected: the design & enhanced rubber abilities.
- The retcon to get it is awful
- The execution is terrible: hamfisted exposition in WHO’s Who fight
- The set up is silly: Zunesha showing up just to fanboy then bounce, Kaido bonking Luffy on the head for convenient awakening unawares.
- The lack of tension in the climax of a fight
- The awful eye popping on bystanders
Unsurprisingly, some of those issues were already toned down in the 2nd appearance with Lucci. Thank goodness for that!

I think it is because people think that Luffy strength will double for each transformation but with the introduction of advance Haki(AdCoA, AdCoC and AdCoO) it is different. Let's try to represent Luffy's strength with numbers. Without Advance Haki, Base - 10, G2 - 20, G3 - 30, G4 - 70, G5 - 100. With advance haki, I put additional 150 for AdCoC, 100 for AdCoA and 50 AdCoO for each Gear. So base Luffy with advance Haki Luffy's strength is 310 while in G5 is 400. His strength in gears are very near to each other.

Having gags in fight was never an issue. The overuse of gag it is. Specially when Oda made the gag his fighting style. But still he went serious to finish Kaido.
And like I said Luffy never needed G5 to have those gags. G5 is just pointless if that is the only purpose. Is all about the retcon and how his fighting style now is only gag because of it. It seems that Oda will make use of G4 when he wants to have more serious moments with Luffy while still pulling some power.

I understand your point. With advanced haki his gears are less necessary for power output since the difference is minimal.
But like I said there was NO difference between gears. Maybe his G4/G5 even performed worse than his base/G4. Which is ridiculous.
Again remember about how Drunken Kaido was suppose to be stronger than his sober version. He fought equally with base Luffy and G4 Luffy. There was no reason for Luffy to pull up his G4 against Kaido at that point. And then against G5... Was Kaido still drunk? Or he got sober and weaker because of that? So G5 pulled a worse fight against sober weaker Kaido than base Luffy against stronger drunk Kaido?
