Well, since I was from the countryside for a good while, I've had several occasions like this. Once, when I was fishing, I had to face a fox. Foxes may seem cute, but there are times when they get "sour" and easily go for a bite. I almost got bitten by one, but I scared it away with a piece of wood.

I've run from jaguars before as well, but if I were to picture myself in a mano a mano situation, I'd probably take on a tiger or a lion.
