ONE PIECE Live Action - Episodes Discussion Thread

When I finished the series 2 days ago I was not sure how to rate the it /10, hesitating between strong 6 or a weak 7. Now I'd say a good 7
It has flaws, it also has changes compared to the original I disagree with like

-Usopp not getting a real moment in his own arc
-While LA Sanji is very cool and smooth and the flashback was good, his development in Baratie was lackluster and rushed compared to the manga
-While the help me moment was really done well, Arlong Park was rushed and I wasn't fan of the choice of having Cocoyashi villagers including her sister all genuinely hate Nami, while it made her backstory even more tragic it also made the villagers less likeable.
-Garp being too serious

But it was overall a pleasing experience, as far as live action adaptations go it is one of the best, and it's promising for future live actions of less cartoony and whacky anime.

I agree with your points. The series did an overall good job, but the characters went through accelerated development arcs.

A 10 episode season would've allowed for it, or just lessening Garp's pressence.

I nitpicked the episodes a lot while watching, so I'll give them props and list the things I thought were great:
- Mihawk's look - the outfit and sword are top tier, and the actor even makes the facial hair work. The eyes can ve off putting for some people, but we've seen it work well for Geralt, so it's not so jarring as it would've been let's say 6-7 years ago.

- Costumes and character design in general - Done really well. Not ALL characters are great, but most of them look really good to great.

- The score - I feel like the opening score is just epic enough to give a feel of the story to the general audience.

- Shanks - Hot take, but I feel like Shanks was amazingly acted. The bar scene with Higuma and the aftermath of it and his and Mihawk's little meeting were both scenes where the chill and goofy East Blue Shanks really came through

- Practical Effects - The Den Den Mushi looked good, and they teied their best with the Fishmen. It's a good thing we don't see any Fishmen in Season 2 so they can scratch that nightmare off of their list, but they can rest easy knowing their Fishmen did look like monsters. Personally, they should've used CGI to retouch their faces and make them emote more, but it's a good first try.

I had a bit of an issue with how they portrayed Koby.

Koby would never defend Luffy like that, standing up to Garp. He knows Luffy is a pirate and he knows its his duty to arrest him.

Koby is a very by the books type character. He only disobeys orders to save other people. Like protecting Helmeppo in the cover story or telling Akainu to stop the war to save injured soldiers.

He wouldn't just tell Garp not to arrest Luffy because Luffy is a good guy. In fact Koby literally wants to arrest Luffy, he said so himself.

Meh he is just luffy's fan girl so they got that right

That being said, its a bit of a nitpick. The LA is an adaptation and hence LA Koby obviously isn't Manga Koby, so its fine if the show runners portray the character slightly differently. Especially since this show, in all likelyhood, won't even make it to marineford or the post skip.

It's in line with Coby being luffy fan girl 🤷

So I watched the first episode. Here are some thoughts
- German dub > English. The voices are perfect (I grew up with them). I still prefer the Jap dub for the Anime but the German dub is a 10/10 for the LA
- Shanks, Yasopp and Roux are really good but Ben and Makino… especially Ben… I have no words
- Roger's execution was good but not impactful enough. We saw young Mihawk, Shanks and even Smoker and no I don’t think that this woman was Crocodile because it was a scene for Shanks and not a separate one. She just stood before him.
- Luffy and Koby are surprisingly good. Nami and Zoro nailed their roles. Especially Emily, she’s great. Zoro's face is… too clean? Do you understand what I mean? I don’t know how to explain it but Zoro should have a more "masculine" face. A little bit more like a rogue ronin but that’s just a little complaint
- the humour is sometimes… too Hollywood. It’s not my cup of tea

It’s overall solid. I think we’re lucky that this LA series was made by fans. I don’t see it as direct OP adaptation. It’s just based on OP and this mindset made it more enjoyable
