It needs to be YOUR rinnegan to use the ability. the rinngan was borrowed from madara so neither obito or nagato could use the Limbo ability

Either that or Nagato didnt know it exsisted like kakashi having MS but not knowing how to use it until he fought itachi

I think that Rinnegan needs to be yours to have an special ability

Kakashi could use Kamui despite not being his, so could Itachi and Danzo used Komo.

The only answer I could think of is Madara sealed it or kept it hidden as it was too OP. We do know he kept secrets hidden from Obito so it’s in character

Could be, but I don’t think that’s reasonable. The Rinnegan is the final stage of the sharingan, therefore the ability sharing probably works like the sharingan.

I think another thing that points to Limbo being a secret is the fact that Kabuto couldn’t recreate it. Madara only used Limbo once he gained his true eyes

Is that really the case? We literally had Madara teach Obito the sage of 6 paths jutsus

I don’t think it was ever explained how eye abilities work. Kakashi initially though he invented Kamui.

Anyways my headcanon is Madara sealed it, so even if Nagato got the eyes he wouldn’t know of it

Although nagato had a bunch of strong rinnegan techniques, I still feel like EMS Madara/sasuke with susanoo were stronger.

Tbh, the rinnegan—sharingan relationship becomes convoluted by the late war arc / Juubi resurrection arc. I don’t think Kishi intended for it to have as many unique abilities as he eventually gave it, it was a byproduct of escalating stakes.

For some cobbled together lore answer? He wasn’t taught them. Obito taught Nagato most of his rinnegan jutsu, so he probably left out the truly dangerous ones.

Do you really think Kishi made rinnegan special abilities along the way and not giving them right away? There is a reason why Madara and Sasuke are original owner of the rinnegan and with it, it comes special abilities - well i believe that

Two possible explanations:
1. He is not Uchiha, therefore doesn't have access to some of the additional abilities the Rinnegan grants
OR
2. These abilities are techniques created using Yin and Yang releases, he could have used them if he thought of them, but didn't

Nagato's "unique ability" was actually using the Rinnegan's powers lol, unlike Madara who only used the Preta path twice and Chibaku Tensei once
