I don't get why Oda doesn't do consecutive vs battle chapters. It would help his pacing so much. He could have Luffy defeat Kizaru in 5 chapters and nobody would complain if it shows their full abilities. Stretching his battles over 30+ chapters is just horrible and some editor needs to tell him it's shit.

I don't link the way Oda handles battles at all.
I completely agree that it would be better if we just go straight chapters of fight like Naruto, Bleach, HxH and others.
It's just better.

But Oda does try to always make the defeat of a villain be the dramatic punch of the finale, so he has to drag Luffy's fights most of the time. Which is why Luffy is always either getting trapped, defeated or is playing tag with his enemy.
It's tiresome.
It's way better for the others Strawhats though.
