That's his role, to be a Gary stu. He is Luffy's idol pirate. You are hating on a character the author doesn't want you to hate on. You are just ruining your One Piece experience.

I hate characters who are pushed on the audience and are flawless. They come across as obnoxious.

Im indifferent to most characters, i like some & dislike some but most characters are forgettable.

Likewise, there's hardly any that stand out at this point in the story.

They all took too many Ls over the years for me to care anymore.

That's what I hate about him, he's such an annoying boy scout. His entire interaction on elbaf was gross. Just everyone gushing over mr.perfect. Only for him to completely dominate flawlessly.

In any other manga we would be rooting for the scrappy, underdog instead of the flawless god venerated by everyone around him.

This wouldn't be the case at all, its a battle shounen most of the time people care for the strong or characters who they think are strong.

One example is The Yonko fandom, or rather WB/Kaido/BM part of it, those 3 characters were introduced as powerhouses so a big reason they have fans is because of their status as powerhouses and in return being powerhouses is a big part of their characters as well, not saying those characters don't have fans due to their other character traits but you get the point.

Even if we exclude the obvious part of Shanks being a powerhouse, people love seeing others fail more than they like to admit because its funny and you can make fun of their fandom as well, so even those who have a neutral opinion on both Shanks and Kid would still take part in the slander.

There's bound to be characters that are made to hate. Charlos, Spandam, Flampe, etc.

But if you enjoy them for despicable pieces of shit they are (like me) then you're not the only one.

I like Usopp but I don't want him to be weak or a comedy relief character forever I'd like him to have a funny personality but being a weakling kills his potential

I'm the same, I love most characters in OP but the powerscaling/agendas/tribalism and the pettiness of those who obssess with them are extremely exhausting. Usopp and Buggy are legit some of the highlights of OP and embody the values and spirit of it and Oda himself greatly.

Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen fits that role more than Shanks.
They are both portrayed as cool, however Gojo is so overwanked that he literally takes away the MC's screentime. Even Gege hates Gojo.
Oda has a good balance with Shanks, he is not so overly wanked that it gets annoying and doesn't take away other character's shine and screentime. But we know Oda can miss too sometimes, just look at Oden.
Oden wank felt forced, he is a good example of an obnoxious character. Not Shanks.
