Not that I completely believe this theory but tbf they could have just lied about his death or something, that'd be pretty easy considering Ryuma's death was 800 years ago.

We learn that Ryuma died of illness in Thriller bark… Thriller bark is the arc where Dr Hogback examined and prepared Ryuma’s body to place Moriah’s Shadows in it

there is such a thing as Autopsies… Hogback is enough to know what exactly killed Ryuma since he’s a literal doctor who specializes in examining corpses

Also we don’t know when Ryuma lived or died. And Ryuma’s body was preserved in the Ringo cold climate

also It’s stated that Ryuma was undefeated in combat
