General & Others Why Is Whole Cake Island So Hated?

Here's a very good video, that explains a lot of the inconsistencies in that arc (credit to Neptune Jr on youtube):

Here's the short version (highlights), for anyone that can't stomach 17 minutes full of plot conveniences:

I love this. I'm willing to forgive the minor details but most of those were spot on. And he didn't even go into the many random events that created the plot. At one point after the chateau explosion, every chapter had some random action that helped them escape. Oda loves unpredictability but it went beyond silly. It was just poor scatterbrain writing.

The Big Mom thing is overplayed, even after going through the nerfs and the screaming, she still managed to look like the most threatening thing we've ever seen to the Straw Hats since Kizaru at Sabaody.

OT: off the top of my head...
- The Meme Team. A supposed top 4 crew instead turned out to be a great steaming dumpster fire of a group, one that Oda loves to shower with Ls, and it doesn't look like he plans on stopping any time soon.
- Big Meme. Worst villain in the the entire series.
- The Vinsmokes felt like a lazy addition that didn't live up to Sanji's original story with Zeff. I keep expecting them to show up fine like Pound and to settle their differences with Sanji.
- The Great Cake Chase. We wasted 30ish chapters on this, but we can't see more of events like Reverie, Akainu vs Aokiji, Shanks's meeting with the Elders, etc? Okay Oda...
- Plot armor and PIS was dreadful, some of the worst yet, a few of my favorite examples being Meme falling for a fake skeleton that had seaweed for hair, Perospero not shooting the Vinsmokes, Smoothie not doing anything (for about 4 years now?), etc.

I rate it average primarily the plot was centered on rescuing a friend from unbeatable enemy.

The story had good foundation but execution was done badly especially regarding to threat of big mom pirate . To be fair oda made them more of a circus freaks than an actual pirates.

Literally oda fell into the trap of overrating a yonko pirates . Are you telling me a Germa army and sun pirates with less than 10 members stopped a pirate squad of 5000 + army ? Adding to it the method of escaping was poorly executed with lack of clarity and fate of Germa and sun pirates. Also many believe big mom hunger pangs was stretched way too much cannot deny it most readers hates big mom when she appears.

Oda literally sacked his editor this week its certain oda and editor did not get along well since yonko saga began. It did not match pre marineford expectation . Many liked wci but sales gigure tells you another story .

Sanji's character was badly handled in my opinion. I'd expected it to be an arc where Sanji would show how the failure surpassed his family and would get to show case his abilities against the BM pirates but instead he was still treated as the useless Sanji at the end of the Arc and it was essentially just the Luffy show for most of the arc. I feel the whole resolution was just terrible however the arc itself was quite enjoyable.

It was negative development for Sanji and a complete middle finger to his fanbase.

Sanji has always maintained a cool head and at times is the voice of reason alongside Zoro as a senior member. Every Straw hat looks to him to as that figure both in dire needs of strength and advice. After what happened in EL with Robin one assumes we would be done with the whole rescue arc... but no. Oda decided to reuse that plotline for Sanji who should understand Luffy as well or better than anyone. It leaves me in such disbelief that he out of all people would do something like this. Robin- I understand living a life of escape and using people and not truly understanding of Luffy. Sanji should have been booted out of the SHs just based on stupidity alone.

It's clear that Big Mom and her crew were heavely handicapped and held back by plot as the Straw Hats and their allies were far from having the power to take on a Yonko and her crew under normal circumstances.
Without it the Straw Hats and their allies would have been quickly annihilated just like the Buster Call should have been far too much for them to handle at Enies Lobby.

All true, but then Oda has to go another route in the first place. You can't write an arc that only functions, when all the antagonists are massively nerfed and tons of plot conveniences have to happen in order for the heroes to survive.

Just to think about it, BM is nowadays still being spiteful nerfed :D

This proves she is just too stronk and Oda has to nerf her so much even risking to ruin his glorious manga

My newest complaint about WCI is that half the Strawhats weren't there for it.

At the time I assumed it was because they were doing something important on Wano. They really weren't though. Zoro cutting up the magistrate was the only thing that happened and that hasn't really effected the plot.

Just a poor way to balance out the swirlyhats missing most of Dressrosa. "If we brought the full crew it would mean all-out war" is a nonsense excuse, it would still be a handful of people against an Empire.

I still like the WCI arc however after the Pound reveal I like the arc a bit less now, for me I really enjoyed the first half of the arc but the second half is when things started to go downhill.

It dragged on for way too long, the arc could have ended much earlier but Oda decided to keep dragging it out.

Big Mom screaming wedding cake, I like Big Mom but her food rampage and seeing her scream wedding cake all the time was just really annoying.

Chapters in which it ended with the SHs about to be killed only for them to be fine in the next chapter, this is something that happened multiple times in the second half of the arc. You basically have a chapter in which it ends in a cliffhanger of the SHs about to be killed, but then in the next chapter they end up being fine. One time is ok but doing it multiple times isn't, here are two examples: Big Mom attacking the SHs with a tsunami as a cliffhanger and Big Mom's ship seemingly destroying the Sunny as a cliffhanger.

When it comes to Luffy vs Katakuri, I personally enjoyed the fight however the fight did dragged on for a bit too long. The only two things I really didn't like from that fight was Flampe, and Oda not showing the last attacks of both Luffy and Katakuri hitting each other.

I personally enjoyed Sanji's character during the arc, however I didn't like that Oda left his family issues unresolved.

Smoothie and Compote, two female characters that Oda hyped up but then didn't show anything from them. Smoothie has the same rank as Katakuri and Cracker and was hyped up to be one of Big Mom's strongest fighters, and yet throughout the arc she didn't do that much. Katakuri, Perospero, and Oven were doing all the work, when you have two non Sweet Generals doing more work than a Sweet General that's a problem.

The Seducing Woods, I actually enjoyed the Seducing Woods in the beginning of the arc but the return to the Seducing Woods in the second half of the arc was horrible.

Nami getting Zeus, I didn't like it then and I still don't like it now.

I think that's pretty much it, those are just my personal issues with the arc.
