Your slave owner isn't being merciful by keeping you alive so that one day you might have a chance to escape; their intention is to work you to death. How is that not worse than simple death?

First of all, slavery was an economic system. While you may think slave works for free, but to have a slave was pretty expensive. They came from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and the trip used to take months. So it is expensive to buy slaves and have them dying. Not saying that they would give them the best life so they wouldn't die but for sure they would make sure that they won't die at least.
And like I said as long I live there is hope. Watch the movie 12 years a slave.

From what we saw the killing of Oharans was the worst so far. Flevance genocide was worse, but you can not blame that entirely on the WG alone.
