He happened to have the extreme luck of having Luffy punching Charlos, otherwise he would be sold to someone else (he could be in a different place though, as I can't see him among the liberated slaves of chapter #504). Considering that he may be already "damaged", he possibly would be sent to Tequila Wolf or something like that to work to death. And yet, he still has the CD mark, so he'll be on the run for the rest of his life.

It is almost as dark as World History. Oda does an amazing job portraying the nature of the ones in power throughout history

Well, as far as we know, he IS still a slave (or was, until he died; if you consider his body, then after that too). He just had enough power/help to escape/offer resistance, unlike 99,9% of other slaves. Still, he tried his chances for his freedom and his dream against all odds, he could've just complied and still be alive as a slave in Mary Geoise, as you recommend.
