Questions & Mysteries What attacks Akainu can use on the sea?

Shanks did block his magma fist though (seemingly with basic CoA)...

That's not CoA, that's CoC ...
Here you can see how Koby loses consciousness.

What is not known is whether it is CoC coating because it is the pretimeskip.
And you can see how Shank's sword turns red when blocking an unnamed basic punch from the injured Akainu.

So despite the use of Shank's CoC or CoC coating, Akainu's magma was still able to affect the sword, which would indicate that Akainu's magma is more powerful than Shank's haki.

It was never stated to be CoC. He probably used basic CoC to "clean his surroundings" + his basic CoA to block the attack. Just like Luffy vs. Chinjao, they used CoC to take down the remaining gladiators from block C and CoA hardening to punch each other.

(Btw, it is also never explained if basic CoC has any considerable effect in a direct clash against non fodders, but it probably has, because Luffy, after battling Chinjao, uses it against Doffy and Katakuri too. Anyway, it was always used alongside CoA.)

:seriously:
Then they were left foaming at the mouth and losing consciousness because here Shanks used CoA and not CoC...

The technique Shanks used against Kid was "CoC coating" (infusion), also known as AdvCoC. It was actually the same technique Roger used against Oden in his flashback (and it was the first time we see a confirmed use of AdvCoC).

As I said, against Akainu he knocked Koby out because of his CoC. However, it doesn't prevent him from using CoA too. Here's another instance of the use of CoA + CoC:
