To begin: Characters can defy physics because of their hearts. Literally. It is the direct source of their personality and willpower.
Vegapunk says Kuma's ability to overcome everything is due to the power of love.
The desires of people manifest as powers.
A fist of "love" cannot be blocked.
Sanji can do Diable Jambe because... his heart burns hotter.
Zoro can speak because of his heart... defying the laws of physics.
When hearts are swapped in characters, they adopt the personality of the heart's owner, not the body—but they don't keep the powers.
When Luffy "dies" and turns into Nika, his voice goes away.
The Voice of All Things
Luffy is suddenly recognizable as Nika when he transforms. His heartbeat turns into the drums of liberation. Luffy's personality even changes when he turns into Nika, but not completely, which is very strange.
Zoan fruits have a will of their own. Luffy's heart, when Nika, has Nika's rhythm. If the Nika fruit has a will of its own, then it is taking over part of Luffy's will. So his heart beats differently because it's not exactly Luffy's heart, it's beating like Nika's.
When near death, Zoro hears drumbeat/heartbeat SFX of inanimate objects. Why does this happen?
Oda loves to hide the truth in trashposts. A character's "voice" is literally their heartbeat. For the briefest moment, Zoro could hear the "voice of all things." He can hear the "heart" of living objects.
Roger could communicate with poneglyphs, inanimate objects, with the "voice of all things." He could hear the "heartbeat" of these inanimate objects.
Devil Fruits
In essence, the "heartbeat" of something is combined with the person. This heartbeat/drumbeat is expressed only in the person's body, not their heart or mind.
Devil fruits use onomatopoeia in their naming structures, and they are "doubled" giving them the sound of a particular rhythm.
With one's heart, someone can modify their body, similar to how Sanji can make his feet burn hotter. When you eat a DF, you are effectively commanding the rhythm/beat of the power with your own heart.
Awakening is when you no longer have two different heartbeats, but instead one singular heartbeat.
The "Nomi Nomi no Mi" is actually a revealing pun: Mi doesn't just mean fruit/seed, it also means body. It's a pun that literally means "mind" (nomi) and "body" (no Mi). So this is has the double meaning of "mind mind: mind" and the nika fruit is the "nika nika mind" It's a triple meaning. Fruit, Mind, Body. So Kaido is basically saying, "your mind and body catch up to the mind and body of the fruit."
The devil fruit, basically, just modifies your body with some future science that doesn't make a lot of sense. However... Let's return to an earlier idea again:
Kuma is able to defy his own death/erasure because of the power of love. This is his heart... not dying. His heart and will are intertwined.
Devil fruits respawn... because the will/heart of a buccaneer (and also person, maybe) is incapable of dying. If the heart can LITERALLY manifest desires, then the heart is where someone's dream comes from. This leads us to two of the most important double spreads in the entire manga:
The dreams... the things that hearts manifest into reality... literally do not go away.
How can anything being imagined happen? Because the heart wills it.
So these reality manipulating desires reincarnate because "dreams never end."
The Five Elders
So if anyone can manifest their desires, how is a minority rule through the WG, Five Elders, and Imu, capable of happening? If the world is full of suffering, why have people not simply willed their way out of this horrible world and into a better one?
They have obviously erased Ohara and Lulusia.
Why are the Level 6 prisoners held captive instead of executed? Because if the world forgets they exist, and they live on, their wills cannot be passed on.
The point of the WG going through all of this stuff is to make people forget that people have risen up against the WG before. Erasing the very concept of resistance is the only way they can actually maintain power, because if people manifest their desires... then the WG has a ghost of a chance.
We can see this in three different places:
Roger being executed because they don't want anyone to continue in his image.
Ace is being executed to symbolize the death of the pirate era.
Saturn wishes to "erase" things, including Nika and Ohara, to make sure no one believes they can resist the WG. The WG erases things (and was told to erase a name by Imu).
Bonney's power is explicitly limited the "more she knows about reality." Saturn is explicitly saying that the less you imagine, the weaker you become.
Saturn's entire purpose up until now hasn't been to win, but to crush. If he crushes people's hopes and dreams, this is the ONLY way they cannot pass on or manifest. Because people still believe in Nika, the fruit was still able to reincarnate. The buccaneers had to be erased because their belief in Nika meant that he could return, and that return is the single most likely way to cause their downfall.
The WG has a ton of strength and power, but the most important thing they must do to maintain it is utterly destroy any hope that people have in the world.
So where's this all going?
The hearts of individuals are the source of power in this world. Through their heart they can manifest desires in a very literal fashion. The "heart" of things like inanimate objects and people that once existed are exhibited through devil fruits, and often reincarnate into human beings time and time again. The WG maintains power not simply through destruction, but by limiting the very imagination of the world through the erasure of information and falsely presenting a hopelessness.
Nika's true power, one of inspiration and unlimited imagination, is the single greatest threat to the WG because Nika is the only person/thing that can make people believe the unbelievable, and finally actualize the destruction of a tyrannical world power through their own belief.
Everything ties neatly together.
