Icarus flew too close to the sun and his wings burned, Saturn was close to the flame and almost burned himself. 
I didn't consider it this way at all when reading... but Saturn isn't just blinded... he's hurt. The SUN hurts him.
.... Lunariyan's were exterminated for a reason. I think intense fire can harm them. Why else did Zoro learn the Fire style...? We also have the fact that Sanji has NEVER used Diable on any of them. Luffy's red roc may not have been enough flame.
I believe, Ancient kingdom was rich in technology and other aspects too. It was ruled by some large family. Joyboy was one of the Princess of that family.
JoyBoy travelled the seas. He saw the world, helped people and other kingdoms became allies to him. He also got to know there are other Family members also in other kingdoms.
Then he came back to the Kingdom and suggested to share technology with rest of the world.
Then family disputes happened. Joyboy and Allies lost. They created Poneglyphs and spread them in the world.
Note - if it was not a large family, then it may be different clans in ancient kingdom.
