you can call it whatever you want being on deaths rope Mahito even tried to convert Kenjaku into a transfigured human..
doesn't seem like you understood the interpretation on sukuna vs yoru, to sukuna death means you lost not simply losing the fight.
yet Mahito was extremely selfish to the point that his death scene of the afterlife was him all alone in the snow....Mahito was the only selfish one in that group aside from Kenjaku

Mahito literally doesnt care about any single person human or curse, don't forget even Sukuna was fascinated by Mahito and enjoyed his approach to tormenting Yuji:
they even shared a laugh when junpei was transfigured and sukuna refused helping yuji...
this was due to Mahito tormenting Yuji and Sukuna relished in it...

knowing youre unable to beat someone and adapting midfight to remove a threat to yourself is called being smart - he needed to take Todo out first and had Sukuna to also worry about he was essentially forced into a 3v1 unintentionally and instead of forcing sukuna into it he was able to avoid him by him evolving midfight...
todos tech might be more refined but the same rules and laws apply to him the same as when he fought mahito adapting to it fully is something that is simply close to impossible, mahito was tricked by todo as well but it was due to clap not always meaning a swap which he didnt know, sukuna has all this information and was simply outsmarted by Todo while even having the information at hand thats the difference...
before covid whoa ho I've been reading manga for over 2 decades now and every year with a new shonen anime these forums get worse and worse, this is honestly one of the worst when it comes to toxic fanbases filled with speed readers and agenda pushers, thats just facts. almost as bad as redditors tbh
