I used to say to my friends Pak would fumble a chase of 100 runs if its in the WC. This was coming because Pak is too much dependent on their openers. If one of them goes cheaply and another doesn't score quickly, its hard.
The pitches have been very poor for batting. Bowler friendly pitches always make good for a low scoring thrillers.
I think problem isn't just openers.
I have made a list of what plaguing Pakistan - once a mighty cricket nation.
1) Internal Politics - Team selection always happens based on PSL performances and not on the basis of domestic cricket.
Even if they select someone from domestic cricket then Babar Azam end up giving more chances to his friends (Azam Khan, Shadab Khan, Iftiqar Ahmed, Nawaz and so on) than the young ones from domestic cricket.
I have no idea why these players were even in the squad.
2) Individual performances matter more than team winning - Batsmen especially top order show so much lack of intent that it seems they just care about their scores.
Yesterday, Rizwan played 24 dots and Imad Wasim played around 12 dots. This is a joke as an opener or for any batsman in T20 cricket.
And, this is going on for ages now - openers aren't meant to take innings to deep but take advantage of powerplay with good strike rate.
3) Captaincy flaws - It's clearly evident that Pakistan needs a good captain who has game awareness. Against USA, when 5 was needed from last ball, mid off was up near 30 yards rather on boundary and it costed them.
And, this isn't the first time it happened. Last year WC was full of such mistakes.
4) instability - management, coaching staffs keep on getting changed. Wahab Riaz is Manager and in team selection lmao
5) Inability to handle pressure and lack of game awareness.
