What series are you watching ?

The first episode of John Adams was very good, the writing and dialogues are really well-done, and Paul Giamatti (whom I have watched in the Holdovers, in which he was amazing too, as a cynical and disgruntled but well-intentioned teacher) is an amazing actor.

The Bear is amazing so far! Completed the first two seasons, thoughts so far:
- excellent dynamic
- actors have great chemistry and really let you suspend your disbelief while watching
- some hollywood leaps of logic in an otherwise grounded show like the walk in not having an amergency release on the inside in the finale of S2, or Sidney and Marcus being presented as being owed an apology by Carmy in the Season 1 finale even though they were major idiots in the episode prior
- Fishes and Forks absolutely slapped and deserve all the praise they get online
- Jeremy Allen White plays an angry man really well (and he looks like Kenny Omega's brother lol)

I watched until ep6 and then exams happened and i just didn't go back to it yet but it's a really good show and i'm gonna go back to watching it at some point.

Thoughts, with some spoilers:
- The premise of the show is amazing, but the execution feels lacking in a lot of places
- The mystery of the town is the only interesting thing about the show because the characters are very one note
- The acting is mediocre. Textbook mediocre, not even a diss - it gets the point across but doesn't even try to be anything better than it has to be. The only exception I could name would be the guy that plays Victor and that's it. The other's are very mundane and all overrely on certain ticks (for example the woman playing Donna puts her hands in her pockets in literally every single scene where she has both hands free; Jim's daughter virtually always crosses her arms in the same circumstances. It leads to a very boring scene presence once you notice it.)
- The sets and costumes are ok, even great depending on the budget they have.
- The monsters are so-so. I like their portrayal when they're trying to lure people out but having them only walk after you (never run) and be virtually unkillable is unenjoyable and leads to a lot of head scratching.
- Cinematography (ig this is what the following is about): There's waaaaaay tooo much cut-aways and teases. Multiple times within the same episode you will get 1-minute scenes where something interesting is teased, a cut happens prematurely, you return later to that character, the resolution of the previous scene is not as interesting as you thought, they tease something else, cut away after 1 minute.
- Pay off - idk if there's any source material or if it is a completely original screenplay but the series suffers from major lack of pay off and reveals. Two seasons have been milked and all we got are non-answers that only raise more questions.
It took a season and a half to kill one of the monsters and all they have to show for it are their constant 1-on-1 therapy sessions.
With a slightly mlre talented cast the boring dialogue could maybe be turned into something interesting, but with the cast as it is I won't hold my breath.

I'll try to ride out season 3 to see if any answers are presented, but as of now this is a 5/10 overall.

AHS: Asylum
Grest cast but I expected way more scares from a horror show. The alien subplot was ass, as was the whole experiment thing Arden was up to.
I remember enjoying Asylum as well as Season 1 but both broke me really badly, the scene in season 1 of
I forgot her name but the main girl finding her own corpse asa ghost ofc and it shown rotting and thus being dead for so long was BRUTAL AND GRAPHIC AS HELL! Truly fucking horrifying! Given how "realistic" the series felt generally to begin with, more "grounded", it hit harder, especially with the school shooting storyline too. That completely fucked me up for a long time even though in my country, stabbings are more of an issue than shootings by far and I've not been in school for decades lol.
Just absolutely terrifying regardless ofc.

The Name Game scene of Asylum was so fucking weirdly brilliant and unexpected and Asylum was so dark and depressing, but I remember liking the ending.

AHS is more psychological and "reality horror" tbh, it doesnt really do jumpscares IIRC otherwise I would have really hated it lmao. Season 4 is where shit really GETS FUCKED. Season 5 too. Season 6 is absolutely dogshit and the worst of the series by far imo but has a really horrifying scene though imo.

1984, the 9th season is absolutely peak but honestly once you get past Season 5, it really goes downhill a lot and after 1984 it was just complete trash to me and a waste of time, that I really regretted watching. Too long to explain why, too much effort and spoilers but you may feel differently to them than I did too ofc.

But yeah Asylum was awesome, Zachary Quinto played that insane doctor didn't he? The one who turned out to be a brutal killer or something? Lily Rabe was great in this season, shes one of my fave actresses in this show but Jessica Lange who was brilliant in Asylum also really steals the show with Season, her storyline in that is BRUTAL and there a lot of amazing scenes in that season imo and some really fucked up, dark and tragic storylines too.

Let me/us know on here if you watch anymore seasons anyway man, glad to see you checked out Asylum and shame you didn't seem to like it that much. A lot of people hated the 1984 season but I feel the series is better when it doesnt take itself too seriously or is more grounded like Season 1, it gets so insanely over indulgent in later seasons and you can tell the ego runs wilder than hulkmania by then.

It was meant to have 13 seasons but I heard it may get more, its getting milked way hard now. Its really become so shallow especially. It was never truly a deep series but seasons 1 and 4 especially had some truly great stuff, its more like a B-Movie of a TV series but has some surprisingly poignant/deep moments too.

The cast really carry this show too, they are phenomenal. Seeing Mr Quicksilver from the Fox X-Men movies (the FAR superior Quicksilver) in so many brutal and even villainous roles here was really eye opening too.

I would say AHS is better watched as a popcorn series, don't expect too much and expect a lot of cringe and awful writing at times. But some seasons are worth a watch and there are scenes/storylines/characters worth watching for.

I'm only now getting into the anthology so it's great hearing which seasons to skip tbh. I had heard about Asylum in particular a long while back so I chose it as the first to watch. Now I'm on Murder House and I think next I'll do Hotel (heard Lady Gaga had agreat performance)

Murder House! Thats the one! Yeah its much better. Yeah Hotel is great for Lady Gaga but one thing that really putme off that scene is theres this really fucking weird Berserk level ratitious obsession with rape. . Its not even subtle, its a "demon" with a drill for a dick brutally raping people, it was a REAL WTF moment watching it. Someone watched Testuo Iron man and enjoyed it too much or something.

But yeah Hotel was pretty good from what I remember, Gaga does carry it well along with some other characters and the music as usual too. The big musical numbers carry the seasons later on. Stevie Nicks is in Coven/Season 3 and its a wonderful scene too. Angela Bassett and Kathy Burke are brilliant in Season 3 and Kathy in Season 6 if not other seasons too, but same for Angela too really.

Both male and female actors really bring their all into this show tbh, no matter how bad the writing gets, the cast tends to carry it really well, taking it seriously and trying to make it work.

I really recommend Seasons 3, 4 and 9 (1984 it should be.) Season 7 the Cult one might be worth checking out, but its all based on modern day politics and Trumpism overtly, so just be aware of that lol. Don't even bother with after 1984, its so awful after that, I think even Season 6 is better than them. Season 6 goes for a found footage/blair witch project, horror documentary style with some backwater/country horor generally too.

Overall I think season 9 is the best, followed by season 4, 1 or 3 then 5 and 2. The rest I don't even bother with/care for.

Don't watch Season 8 BEFORE Season 3 though, its a direct continuation of it.

Yup, heard a lot of praise for 1984 so that one is on the list as well. The other seasons I'll wait and see if there's anything worthwile in them that might satisfy horror needs lol

But you're right, the cast is really giving it their all and one can see there's not a lot of half-assing. Nothing but appreciation for that alone

I've been watching a couple of shows lately.

1. True detective - I just completed the season 1 and it blew my mind. The casting was on point and the story was very interesting.

2. Only murders in the building - I'm currently on season 4 and up to date. Love the comedy and the chemistry between the old and young actors. Steve martin is truly a legend.

3. Perfect Couple - story is not that great but casting is great. Lots of well known faces including one Indian actor as well.

4. Big little lies - I don't know about you, but I do love some uptown modern housewife drama mixed with secrets, lies, deceit.

5. Lord of the rings series - very late to complete this but proud to do it and be part of the LOTR fandom. Totally indulging in more theories and stuff. So many great characters and love the friendship between the elf and the dwarf.

@Kizaruber Eats I just noticed in Season 1 they use soundtracks from Bram Stoker's Dracula and Kill Bill:
The ominous organ arrangement is from Dracula, used when they're slowly approaching towards a scary reveal
The whistling song from Kill Bill was used, albeit acapela, during the library part of the school shooting
