Smoker seems to be perpetually sidelined. I deadass don’t know what his role is anymore.

I thought maybe he could be Koby’s rival, like the Sengoku to his Garp, but Koby already has Drake and Grus.

If Koby is supposed to be the future of the marines and Garp’s successor, then Smoker is essentially the Ace of the marines. A guy who could have been the Marine Hero/Next Garp, but ultimately fails.

Much like how Ace died and his fruit was inherited, what if the same happens to Smoker. He gets a valiant sacrifice in elbaf, dying for his ideals.

Then his fruit gets inherited by Tashigi or Koby, who carry out his will. I think Tashigi getting it could make sense as she was part of the “future of the marines”, while Smoker wasn’t included in hachinosu.

Also Tashigi has a unique connection to Zoro, bearing Kuina’s personality and face. Meanwhile Smoker has no role that Koby does not already have.

I think Tashigi inheriting Smoker’s powers and becoming legitimately strong, as opposed to the weakling she was portrayed to be, would be needed character development.

Ultimately I feel like Smoker’s absence really makes me question his relevance. He had multiple chances to come back. He could have been in egghead. He could have been in hachinosu. He could have been shown chasing a shichibukai.

But it seems like his character got dropped. He is shown to be back now, but the question is for what? Wano and egghead already set up Sword as the future of the marines. Where does Smoker fit into this?

I think it’s very possible that Smoker dies to further the development of the future of the marines.

Do you truly think Oda is going to treat a MUCH more important character like Ace? The man who could've ended the rise of 2 emperors on the same day as an Ace? Lmao.

The first and only character in the series to tell the Gorosei to fuck off is gonna be treated like Ace?

Koby was a no show for 900 chapters, has cool cp9 level moment with rescuing civilians from fodder lol.
Then nearly 200 chapters later he's helpless on front of Boa, then in front of Teach.
Then he spends 90% of the time running away, while Prince Grus out showcases him.

It's funny you hype up Koby off of 1 attack moment, ignoring how Gruss grossly outshines him in Hachinuso.

But dear me, Smoker is a no show for about 300 chapters... Oda forgot him, he's fodder, Oda doesn't know what to do with him... all in a series that's likely going multiple hundred more chapters. Lol.

Tbf, Ace's potential was so high that they felt the need to execute him and fight off Whitebeard and his goons to do it. Sakazuki also said that he and Luffy were both equally dangerous in terms of potential.

He was created as a mere buildup character for Sabo's eventual entrance as the Brother who will change the world in parallel to Luffy. We're talking about Ace was treated by Oda not his in-verse potential.

He serves as a motivational tool for both Sabo and Luffy. That's all his purpose as a character was. Which is why you don't even get to know his backstory fully and his character depth until post-death in the flashback.

Before that you had:

" :D :D :D Big bro to luffy hahahahah"
" >:[] I'm kill you fat bum Teach!!! Raaahh"
" fuck my life, my life sucks, I suck, sorry guys I made you waste your time on me :(("

Only after his death do you get to truly understand his mindset.

It's just disrespectful to compare Luffys big marine rival to a filler character to Sabo's main story.

Bruh cmon... koby, smoksie and Fuji are our new world order of WG goats. Smoksie only looks ass bc he is indecisive
Fuji is done with the WG but understands pirates are ass
Koby is done with the WG but knows there's good pirates
Smoksie is done with the WG and doesn't trust pirates but also not the WG, he is much closer in comparison to Fuji than koby and its represented quite well actually

@Xione Also I think people favor Koby more because he's Luffy's age and was trained by Garp himself. Plus he was copying Garp's move and everything. So he seems like a rival to Luffy more than Smoker at first glance, although Smoker has consistently matched and/or overpowered Luffy (in power and portrayal) each time he's seen him, while Koby seems to be constantly inferior to Luffy, ever since his introduction.
He could still catch up to Luffy, but I can't see this happening unless Sengoku decides to teach him some really busted stuff he knows (since Sengoku did indeed seem to be a god tier some time ago), and even then it'll take time for him to finally get to Luffy's level. Right now Koby is around Perospero or Jack level.. That's me being generous, btw, it's purely riding off the fact that he was constantly hitting the battleship bags even when he didn't need to and was trained by Garp and called his protege.
But yeah, despite all that, it seems like Smoker will likely be Luffy's true rival. Koby may get some shine and be respected by Luffy and what not, similar to Roger mentioning both Garp and Sengoku as worthy opponents to him, but it'll take a good amount of time..

Forgot to mention Koby also said he would be an Admiral, which Smoker has never claimed. Perhaps that's another reason people prefer him over Smoker in terms of who will be Luffy's rival

He's been fodder since haki was introduced. Too bad because I like him.

Where there is smoke there is fire... Smoker will be a Hero with clout equal to that of the Flame Emperor Sabo, as the mad dog revolutionizes the Navy and makes his name as another monstrous Logia enforcing Justice.

You can cope about it all you like

the fact is, Koby is and was always Garp’s successor.

Smoker is literally the marine equivalent to Ace. He started off with seemingly more potential than Koby, as he had a logia. But his haki was mid so he fell off.

Tashigi is more relevant than Smoker. She has direct ties to Zoro and was part of the hachinosu subplot. Garp included her in the future of the marines.
