Yeah I kinda expect the 5 chapters news soon, but we got it sooner than I what I thought. Sukuna vs Yuji just started and there’s a bunch on open plot lines like Yujo, Hakari’s fight the merger etc

The merger was just a device to make this arena happen and Sukuna shit talking to get Yuji and co riled up
There is no narrative importance for it

Good riddance. This is what happens when mangakas like Gege rely on shock value to generate hype.

Too many useless cliffhangers without any satisfactory pay off. Last 10-15 chapters were like fan drawn manga whose sole purpose was just to troll the readers.

Gege got rid of Kenjaku early so that he can end the manga early. So not really axed. Gege just dropped the ball.
