Well he didn’t have poison… he said it was poison to fuck with Bartolommeo
And we know why he killed Bartolommeo, because Bartolommeo burned his flag, and tried to take over one of Shanks’ islands. Why would Bartolommeo being Luffy’s ally somehow make him chill about that?
What’s interesting this chapter is the fact that Shanks even tried to play this mind game with Bartolommeo in the first place… He doesn’t have poison but him fucking with Bartolommeo anyway is some sadistic shit
And of course the usual shit of Shanks trying to kill surrendered opponents… he did it with the kid pirates and he’s doing it with Bartolommeo

- Shanks captures Bartolomeo to get him to stop attacking his land
- Shanks tests Bartos loyalty by offering Barto a choice to kill Luffy in exchange for his freedom
- Barto passes the test and Shanks frees him
The only thing questionable is Yasopp attacking the ship which can likely just be a faint where shanks knew Barto would be able to create a barrier in time using FS and Yasopp used a big flashy bullet to make it look like shanks sank them to the fodder he’s protecting, while at the same time giving Barto a chance to sail away
