A question for everyone here who is from the United States: What is campus life like there ?

#1
I'm asking out of curiosity and need to know.
I am 23 years old,and personally I have not been able to enjoy my school life as I should have. I wasn't bullied or anything like that . The reasons for this were various problems caused by my Asperger's syndrome. I was sad about it for a while, but thanks to the encouragement of my family and therapists, I'm now in good spirits. I know I'm in the prime of my youth and I have plenty of time and opportunities ahead of me to make up for it.
I recently started a course to fully master English as my second language, and I have enrolled in a technical course that will start in February next year. I intend to graduate from college and university here in my city, and if by then I have fully mastered English,I want to do an exchange program in the United States.
I want to graduate from another college and university there, and eventually move there when I move out of my parents's house.
So I want to know in advance what life is like in these study environments in the United States. No one better to tell me this than the people who are native there.
How would you describe college and university life based on your own experiences ? Are they good environments to learn, socialize, find yourself and grow as a person ?
How autism-friendly is the United States as a country ? Is society there kind and supportive of people like me ? Has anyone here ever met an autistic person in high school, college or university ? If so,how were they treated there ?

Well i personally never been to a college campus, but like most things in life someone else's experience, won't be the same as yours long as you find the right group of friends and ignore the haters you'll be good

Autism isn't really look down on that much these days tbh at least not that I've noticed, but there's always gonna be that one guy who didn't catch up with the times and spread hatred just for the sake of hatred

college is typically when folks are a bit more mature socially to navigate conversations and with different people, I think you would find the overwhelming majority in most college campuses here wouldnt mind . you can have a great social life if you are willing to push for it .

I'm not American so I can't help you with that, but it seems like you mastered your English just fine. :optimistic:

I went to college in the city, so I never really got that college town experience most people associate with going to school in America. I just went to class, hung out with friends, studied, rinse and repeat. I never lived in a dorm tho, so I was never completely immersed in campus life.

As for your other questions about your condition, I think you’d have to focus on what school is right for you based on their policies and support programs for people that are on the spectrum. Bear in mind that private education in the US is extremely expensive, expect to pay no less than 12k per semester.

🇧🇷 😃 I am from Brazil. Are you too ?
I want to become the kind of person who has a lot of fun outside. Parties at college and university are one of the experiences I want to have. I don't know if I would have an easy time dealing with the rowdy, zany aspects of parties the first time around, but when you don't know how to do something, you need to have the willpower to learn.
But I am a correct and careful person. I will be careful not to do anything wrong or indecent.
I made the decision to never drink alcohol in my life, because I know the problems it causes in the world. I will only be open to going to college and university parties whose hosts are considerate of people who don't drink alcohol.

My experience was definitely on the positive side

Met a lot of people there that I consider lifelong friends, had a ton of cool professors, learned quite a bit, many many many unique experiences, etc

Wasn’t perfect but I’d recommend it if you have a reason to go (degree seeking) and you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone

Good luck

I have extended family in Texas , Alabama and California . Honestly it depends my cousins got full schorlarship ride other had to pay from their pocket .

If you are really good in academics and sport University will love to have you .

I’d suggest you to prefer state university over private ones unless you get in MIT, CalTech , Harvard or Yale . The mega four have need blind policy .

If you are studying STEM best place on earth really US offer great education and research . There is no par really and most campus in US are diverse .

your English is pretty good but if you do have trouble socializing , perhaps you might have an easier time if you went to Portugal instead.

I know it can be a bit tough for immigrants to adjust to the change in countries. America has a big Latino population but they’re mostly Spanish speaking.

Oh just to speak on your original post

Whether you have a good time in college is largely dependent on the school you choose to go to

Better schools usually have extracurricular activities and school funded clubs amongst other things that make your time on campus a lot more interesting

Just my 2 cents

How old is your friend ? Did he not receive treatment early in life ?
Did he get better after college ? Is he better now ? Was university a better time for him ?
