Powers & Abilities Guns are a significant part of Roger and Shanks’s fighting style

When will the cope over Shanks and Roger being swordsman end?

Even though Shanks:
- uses or grabs his sword every single time he's in a confrontation or fight
- he has used a sword since he was a child
- he had legendary dues with the WSS
- he is the WSS rival
- he was called a swordsman in multiple times
- the WSS is waiting for a swordsman stronger than him
- he was the only one able to copy Rogers powerful sword slash technique
- he oneshot a SN with a powerful sword slash technique
- his sword is currently an unknown grade and l his beloved blade
- he has never used a gun or seen holding a gun
Yet you believe guns are a significant part of his fighting style.
:crazwhat:

It's the same with Roger. Even though Roger:
- has a superior grade blade.
- he call his sword into his beloved blade
- he used a sword to test Oden's power
- he used a sword to clash against WB, one of his rivals
- he possesses a power sword slash technique
- he was called a swordman
you believe guns are a significant part of his fighting style because he was seen holding a gun one time.
:whitepress:

I guess punching is a significant part of Zoro's fighting style because he beat and oneshot a monster fish with one punch.

This is like thinking Kizaru can't fight with kicks or beams cause he had to use a sword against Rayleigh
Roger had to use a sword against WB
Why would he use a gun there against a sword ?
He a weapon that's long and strong enough to withstand the blow

In chapter zero, Roger was shown holding a pistol in the Edd war battle against Shiki.

In the pirate warrior games, I do believe both Roger and Shanks have gun attacks.

But most significantly, I think their guns hold special relevance as far as their connection to Luffy goes.

Luffy is the successor of both Roger and Shanks. He told Shanks in chapter 1 that he wishes for his punches to be as strong as pistols. Most of Luffy’s named attacks have a gun theme.

I think one could also draw a parallel between Luffy’s rivals and Shanks/Roger. Law is a D like Roger, Kid is a conquer like Roger. Kid also has red hair, one arm, and an eye scar like Shanks.

Law is a swordsman while Kid, among other things, uses makeshift guns. One of his strongest moves is a railgun.

This isn’t to negate their status as swordsmen. Roger and Shanks are confirmed swordsmen. But swordsmanship clearly isn’t their only skill.

It’s not difficult to see why Roger and Shanks would use guns. Their signature move divine departure seems to only be a close range technique. Rather than sending a long distance slash to defeat Kid, Shanks blitzed him from the shore to land divine departure at close range.

It’s very likely that being less skilled swordsmen, Shanks and Roger aren’t capable of Mihawk tier flying slashes that can range entire islands. Hence they rely on guns for ranged attacks.

This also explains the difference between Roger and Shanks despite the two having basically the same abilities. Roger could wield a sword and gun at the same time. Shanks can only do either/or.
Roger isn't a swordman btw

But you're not wrong,

Roger and Shanks definitely know how to use guns in combat
Shanks literally has top 3 YCs who are all gunmen
For a swordsman, his crew doesn't really reflect him there in combat style

In the last 5 years we have got many panels of roger ,yet his famous pistol is always missing.
He even went ahead and retconned the hat Roger had on the God valley incident but no gun in sight.

But sure lets keep using a panel from 6-7 hundred chapters ago to validate our headcannon.

I will play along and give you a" real "reason why Roger used the gun there.
Roger at Edd war was beyond sick with less than a year left to live,he couldn't muster to fight a top tier in Shiki,so in a desperate action he picked up a gun. Poor sap.

The real reason is Oda simply wanted to depict the Pirate king like an actual pirate from our times(also the reason he doesn't have a DF),hence the use of both sword and gun. When it came down to integrate him in the story and give him his prefered choice of fighting he decided to drop the gun.

I just wanna say that chapter 1 Roger > Kuma's flashback Younger Roger >> Oden's flashaback Roger (in term of design of course)

Saying that guns are a significant part of Shanks combat style because he uses them in a fucking video game and Roger was drawn holding a gun one time all just to cope about Shanks being totally not a swordsman is super pathetic dog not gonna lie.

By the same logic Mihawk is a martial artist since he neck chopped Zoro in the Anime.

:saden:

I will legit never get why all other Agenda people don't bully you Shanks-stans way harder on this shit. This is peak clown behavior no joke.

Shanks was quite literally used as a way to display how great of a swordsman Mihawk is by Brannew, and you intellectual heavy weights STILL refuse to acknowledge the basic fact of Shanks being a swordsman.

Why the fuck would they use Shanks as a comparison point if he was not a swordsman?
