If you have an important role and squander it by counter claiming D1 or 2 you're not helping town as much as you could if you were more perceptive. You catch more scum by being patient and you don't get a powerful role taken out early. A lot of these games are balanced on the idea that the most powerful town roles don't get taken out D1 or 2. Being short-sighted isn't a virtue.

Obviously it depends on the specific role and what was claimed, but almost always if its a guaranteed scum you take that, unless its a SRM game and then all bets are off on whether its worth the trade off. In a normal game you claiming can catch multiple scum because most likely a watch or protect or something can help prolong your role or catch scum visiting you as well. Its very advantageous to counterclaim. Now certain things can change whether you should, but if you think it's scum most of the time you should claim
