The evil shanks was needed so Oda can have Luffy fight shanks. That feels like genuinely the only reason he exists. Oda can’t have Luffy fight real shanks cause he wrote their connection to be too friendly to have any animosity or stakes so he brings in an evil shanks to fill the hole. And while shanks’ parallel fights Luffy, Shanks will fight Luffys parallel in Blackbeard.

It is weird, because 95% of characters in One Piece are just horrible people.

But Shanks really doesn't have a character flaw.

I feel like Oda will absolutely take the knock off Luffy vs shanks if for no reason but for the emotional drama that comes with it.

It’s kinda like Sabo eating aces fruit. It was cliche emotional payoff, but it was effective.

Idk man, Oda has created scenes already where Luffy has declarated wanting to fight Shanks and the implied vice versa. But I guess if you want Luffy to fully mop the floor then it makes "sense". Or Oda could have just made Shanks a morally complex character but here we are lol

Its definitely pranks lol, I remember once oda got nervous when someone asked him about Shanks missing his scar when talking with the Gorosei.

gotta give props to Oda, in some sense this does seem planned for awhile
