Assuming a lot right now, but I guess this is Oda's way of letting Luffy fight Shanks but also letting Blackbeard do the same. I expected this to be more complicated during a final war, and maybe it still is, but to me this at least paints a picture where Luffy can absolutely trash "Shanks" and fans of Blackbeard can still have the catharsis of him and Shanks potentially fighting in the end.
I would have preferred it to just be two morally complex characters fighting Luffy and each other, but it doesnt seem like Oda agrees with that.

I just don’t see how Oda could make shanks morally complex. Shanks’ entire character till now is just that he’s making bets on the next generation and protecting weaklings. A sudden switch up would be a huge betrayal to most of the one piece fandom who just wants a heroic figure like shanks.
If Oda wanted Luffy to be able to fight shanks seriously, it can’t happen. That’s why Evil Shanks has to exist so Oda can get the emotional payoff of Luffy vs Shanks along with giving Luffy a reason to fight seriously.
Plus again, Oda having Luffy fight shanks’ parallel while shanks fights Luffys parallel is actually pretty thematically good

A betrayal to the fandom is irrelevant though lol, there are figures in many stories that betray the audience, its literally their point of character.
Yes, Shanks has been altruistic 99% of his appearances, but the key point about Chapter 907 is the fact that he (at the time when not assuming he had a twin) did something shocking to betray the reader. Its why so many people were in denial about his behavior anyway at that point.
This also doesnt really change the fact that he still reacts oddly to Luffy in 903 and deciding to go after One Piece in 1054. It also doesnt change his brutal nature (which yes, is justified) to Kid and Bartolomeo. The pure fact the latter was attacked, at least shows Shanks' crew isnt afraid of attacking Luffy and his fleet. These things still stand even if Shanks has a twin God Knight brother.

If Shanks was morally complex and betrayed the reader and Luffy? Then no it would have been a fight to the death because Shanks isnt all good.
Thats exactly the disappointment. Oda played with the idea by showing "him" with the Gorosei and making the reader think about it.
