Because unfortunately some people in this community do not read One Piece for the story anymore :kayneshrug:
Can't blame them for that. I've personally stopped doing that too after reading the atrocity of the second half of WCI. Only reason why I still read it is cause I just wanna see what happens at the end. Almost 1,000 chapters in. Would feel pretty meh to quit and not see it through.

Oda said the "5 years" thing. The editor actually thwarted it the first time.
He said he "hopes" to finish in 5 years. Just like he said, years ago, that he hoped to finish by 2002 lol. I'm mostly talking about the parroting his editors/Jump does when he makes a comment. Nobody should believe it, let alone Oda's estimates.

When you realize the whole thing is pure marketing, you understand why the Editor changed his opinion about the "5 years" comment. It generates increased interest because "oh shit, OP is almost ending?", even though many of us know very well its not lol.

Still, Oda is the one who said it. Twice! Once when he said that it will have few volumes above 100 and second when he said that he wants to finish it in 5 years.

And Oda doesn't do marketing like that.

Another important thing people should notice is the setting.

Skypeia and Water 7 saga was a coherent part of the story, they were a creation when Oda was expanding the story. In another words, Skypeia and Water 7 saga is mostly filler-like the context of the larger story. So, Oda didn't plan them that tightly rather he was drawing/writing freely.

However, right now, the story is more tightly controlled and story bleeds over from one arc to the next. This means that Oda has to plan more thoroughly with less chance of wrong prediction.
