My honest opinion is Kid will be back on Elbaph, meet Gunko, will realize his real target never was Shanks, but Shamrock and so Shamrock will be his goal and he will win his fight against him, which is basically "Kids third fight against Shanks".

It's Oda's way of having him defeat enemies that he's not ready for yet... so that opponents that are still on that level can still be a menace to him. Sometimes Luffy surpasses the guys he defeats only on a later arc, with some exceptions, but it's very notorious post-TS.
