Shanks probably fought Kaido off because Kaido didn't want to face Shanks' sword.

Oda is going out of his way to portray swordsmanship as most dangerous fighting style in the series and instead of die hard Shanks fan boys like @Red Admiral praising him as second strongest swordsman in the world and capable of giving almighty Mihawk (who can one shot Kaido) a high diff fight, they pretend he has a magical fighting style.

Some of the Shanks fanboys are his biggest haters

Yup, at this point its totally warranted. 400 chapters into the new world and many of them haven't shown WHY they should be a part of a crew with a captain about to surpass a Yonko (assuming he does). Significant growth is entirely warranted, especially with how much this arc was set up.

You're missing the point. The whole point of the alliance was to strengthen themselves against the unknown power that WH/Marines possesses.

While Pirates do betray each other, betraying each other in this crucial juncture doesn't help either of them. Similarly, Kaido dying or Linlin dying doesn't help the other side either.

That being said, Rocks Pirates were more or less self-destructive. Hence, it is doubtful that they can comprehend the situation sufficiently enough to properly work together.

In another words, neither Kaido nor Linlin wants the other to die till clear advantage presents itself. But that doesn't mean one will help out the other.
