I think there’s a big difference between having subordinates who you can send out to faraway islands while you remain at your centralized headquarters/order to help you in battles of numbers,

Madara's ego is insane, Hashirama fairly(Iirc at least) beat him and could have killed him if he wanted to, but Hashirama chose to show mercy, and allowed him to live in the leaf village and become an important member, but because he couldn't become Hokage, he left the village and tried to destroy it. I mean, what kind of scumbag would betray someone who showed them mercy?
That's not entirely true. Iirc it was Hashirama that wanted Madara to become Hokagr but Hashirama was favoured by all. As far as I remember Madara's main reason was that he predicted Tobirama would inevitably become Hokage and fuck the Uchiha clan over which lead him to the conclusion that true peace between Uchiha and Senju can't be achieved through cooperation (he calls it quite form of conflict iirc).

All those are poor excuses. If they are truly stronger than Gunko, they would have beaten her no matter what. Luck is part of strength. It's not Gunko's fault her opponents couldn't create a situation where they could beat her.

Madara flexed on Gokage and admitted the only one who could ever match him was Hashirama. He created a long-term plan to surpass him and manipulated an emo lil kid into taking the entire world at war. As Edo Tensei Hashirama was only a side quest to him
Black Zetsu is the real asspull here. Shit went so bad and stupid it made Naruto call Obito the coolest guy ever
