THE BRACKET

Light Yagami - Death Note
Light Yagami from Death Note is a brilliant yet morally ambiguous character whose descent into darkness is as fascinating as it is chilling. After discovering the Death Note, a supernatural notebook that allows its user to kill anyone whose name they write in it, Light takes on the persona of Kira, a god-like figure who seeks to rid the world of criminals. His intelligence and determination to create a utopia by his own definition make him a compelling anti-hero, but his growing arrogance and obsession with his own vision of justice lead him down a dangerous path.

What makes Light stand out is his intellectual prowess and moral decline. His initial motivations are rooted in a desire to make the world better, but as the series progresses, his actions become increasingly self-serving and ruthless. Lightโ€™s complex relationship with the concept of justice, and his battle of wits with L, make him one of the most iconic and memorable characters in anime. His journey is a cautionary tale of the dangers of unchecked power and the blurred lines between heroism and villainy.

VS

Vash the Stampede - Trigun
Vash the Stampede is a character who defies expectations, blending comedy, tragedy, and deep philosophical exploration in one. Often seen as a carefree, goofy, and seemingly invincible gunslinger, Vash is far more complex than his reputation suggests. Beneath his eccentric exterior lies a man burdened by immense guilt and the weight of his past. His idealism and unwavering belief in the value of life often put him at odds with the harsh world around him, but it's this very conviction that makes him such a compelling character. Vashโ€™s journey is one of self-discovery, redemption, and the pursuit of peace, even in a world rife with violence.

What truly makes Vash stand out is his struggle between his outwardly optimistic persona and the darker, more conflicted side of his character. His ability to show mercy and compassion, even to those who wish him harm, highlights the core of his humanity. Vash's story isn't just about saving others but about saving himself from the trauma of his past. His idealism clashes with the brutality of the world, making his journey not only a physical one but an emotional and philosophical one. Vash is a tragic hero whose growth and internal conflict make him one of the most iconic characters in anime.

VS

Lelouch Lamperouge - Code Geass
Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass is a brilliant strategist and the mastermind behind a revolutionary movement to overthrow an oppressive empire. With his Geass power, which allows him to command others, Lelouch is able to manipulate situations and people to achieve his goals. However, beneath his cold, calculating exterior is a character who struggles with his own ideals, the consequences of his actions, and his deep love for his sister, Nunnally. Lelouchโ€™s inner conflict, his moral ambiguity, and his charismatic leadership make him a character thatโ€™s both fascinating and morally complex.

What makes Lelouch stand out is his multifaceted nature. On one hand, heโ€™s a ruthless and intelligent leader, but on the other, heโ€™s a deeply emotional person torn by his desire for justice and his personal connections. Lelouchโ€™s journey is about reconciling these parts of himself, as well as dealing with the consequences of the sacrifices he makes for his revolution. His ability to manipulate both his enemies and allies, coupled with his tragic motivations, make him one of the most iconic and morally gray characters in anime.

VS

Frieren - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Frieren, the mage from Frieren: Beyond Journeyโ€™s End, represents an exploration of time, memory, and the evolution of relationships. As an immortal who has lived for centuries, sheโ€™s spent much of her life focused on magical pursuits and quests, while her human companions grew old and passed away. This immortality makes Frieren somewhat detached from the ordinary life that her friends and companions experienced, and it isnโ€™t until after theyโ€™re gone that she starts to understand the true value of the bonds they shared. Initially, Frieren is indifferent to human emotions, viewing them as fleeting and inconsequential. But as she embarks on a new journey with younger companions, she begins to realize the importance of time, the depth of her past relationships, and the emotional connections that she took for granted.

What makes Frierenโ€™s character so compelling is the slow but impactful shift in her perspective. As she learns to cherish the fleeting moments of human life, her growth becomes less about the magic she wields and more about her ability to emotionally connect with others. Her journey isnโ€™t one of grand battles or heroic feats, but rather a quiet reflection on time, loss, and the subtle beauty of relationships. In a world where immortality is seen as a gift, Frierenโ€™s story shows that even endless life comes with its own burdens-especially when it means outliving those youโ€™ve come to care about. Frierenโ€™s emotional journey is one of healing, self-discovery, and a poignant reminder that the people we meet along the way shape our lives in ways we often donโ€™t realize until itโ€™s too late.

VS

L - Death Note
L from Death Note is the eccentric yet brilliant detective tasked with catching the mysterious killer known as Kira. His unconventional methods, quirky habits, and unpredictable behavior make him one of the most memorable characters in anime. Despite his eccentricities, Lโ€™s intellect and unorthodox investigative techniques are unmatched, allowing him to come incredibly close to uncovering Kiraโ€™s identity. His rivalry with Light Yagami, the protagonist, is a battle of wits, with both characters constantly testing each otherโ€™s intelligence and moral limits.

What makes L stand out is his unique blend of brilliance, mystery, and vulnerability. Heโ€™s an enigmatic figure whose awkwardness and childlike demeanor contrast sharply with his exceptional detective skills. Lโ€™s emotional complexity adds depth to his character, particularly in his subtle interactions with others, revealing his loneliness and sense of isolation. His pursuit of justice and his unwavering commitment to catching Kira, even at the cost of his own well-being, makes him one of the most iconic and compelling characters in Death Note.

VS

Roy Mustang - Fullmetal Alchemist
Roy Mustang is a key figure in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, and his role as the ambitious and charismatic Flame Alchemist serves as both a source of strength and a challenge for the protagonists. Mustang is a complex character, driven by a desire for power and influence, yet motivated by a deep sense of justice and responsibility. His ambition to become the Fรผhrer of Amestris stems not from a thirst for personal gain but from his belief that he could create a better country by making the right decisions. Despite his sometimes flippant demeanor and penchant for sarcasm, Mustang is a deeply principled person who would do anything to protect those he cares about, especially his subordinates and the people of Amestris.

What makes Roy Mustang an outstanding character is his strategic mind, emotional intelligence, and his moral dilemmas. Heโ€™s often caught in the conflict between the need for military power and the desire for peace, and his internal battles reflect larger themes of governance, sacrifice, and the consequences of war. His relationship with his team, particularly with his trusted lieutenant, Riza Hawkeye, is central to his character development. Mustangโ€™s eventual pursuit of revenge, tempered by his understanding of the personal cost of such a path, further deepens his complexity. Roy is a morally gray character who must balance his ideals with the harsh realities of the world, making him one of the most memorable characters in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga.

VS

Guts - Berserk
Guts from Berserk is one of the most intense and tragic characters in anime. Born from a dead body and raised in a brutal world, Guts' life has been one of constant suffering and survival. His sheer will to live, combined with his indomitable strength and unwavering desire for vengeance, make him an unforgettable protagonist. What sets Guts apart is his relentless determination to keep fighting, even when faced with insurmountable odds. His journey is about more than just physical battles; itโ€™s about confronting the deep emotional scars left by betrayal, loss, and the horrors of war. Gutsโ€™ internal struggle, particularly with his feelings of anger and his relationship with the dark forces in his life, gives him a tragic depth that is rare in protagonists.

What truly makes Guts compelling is his vulnerability beneath the hard exterior. Despite his brutal nature, he is haunted by his past and constantly grappling with his own humanity. His relationships with characters like Casca and his eventual quest for redemption add layers to his character that make him more than just a typical warrior. Guts' character is defined by the tension between his fierce desire for revenge and his search for meaning in a world that seems to have none. His journey of resilience, personal growth, and grappling with destiny makes him one of the most iconic and complex characters in anime.

VS

Thorfinn - Vinland Saga
Thorfinn from Vinland Saga is a deeply complex character whose evolution from a vengeful young boy to a man of peace and self-reflection is one of the most compelling arcs in anime. Born the son of a renowned warrior, Thorfinnโ€™s life is shaped by violence from a young age after the death of his father at the hands of the Viking leader Askeladd. Consumed by a desire for revenge, Thorfinn spends much of his life as a ruthless fighter, driven by hatred and a need to prove himself. However, as the series progresses, he begins to question the true meaning of strength, honor, and revenge, ultimately leading him down a path of personal redemption. His internal conflict and growth are what make his character arc so powerful and poignant.

What makes Thorfinn stand out is his struggle to find purpose in a world full of violence. Initially, he seeks vengeance for his fatherโ€™s death, but as he grows older, he begins to understand the futility of revenge and the cost it takes on his own soul. His journey is not just one of physical battles, but of emotional and philosophical growth. Thorfinnโ€™s transformation from a man of bloodlust to someone seeking a better life for himself and others is a story of redemption, personal growth, and the search for meaning in a brutal world. His evolution is a testament to the power of self-reflection and the possibility of change, even for someone whoโ€™s spent their life consumed by hate.

Is the new Trigun any good?
it's ok, but they changed alot stuff from the original anime. still worth a watch.

Is vash that good? I watched 5-6 eps long time ago and got bored so dropped it.
yes, it worth it imo. Though the reboot has more death scenes compared to the anime. though without spoiling, anime does turn darker once learn about what vash really is.

Looks like Frieren is the favorite to win the 2rny

He looks kind of ugly.:pepecafe:
The anorexic character designs of Code Geass put me off of watching it for quite a while, but when I decided to give it a fair try to see what all the fanfare was about I was absolutely not disappointed.

So I can somewhat relate to the sentiment, but the story and series is so well done that it completely nullifies any bad sentiment about the art direction.

To put it in a more fancy way, the well written story served as a catalyst to make me accept and appreciate the series, art included, for what it was

No way lelouch is losing guy is literally the most written true MC and one of the goats in anime

What do you expect from an ensamble of One Piece fanboys

Frieren is overrated:willight:

So to be "that guy"..

I'll agree that I don't think it's the greatest show of all time - or even recent times, but people in general have a tendency to use hyperbolic language when talking about things they like/ dislike

Frieren is definitely a great series no doubt, and it also has the benefit of being relatively new so they are more prominent in memory.

That being said though, while I wouldn't personally vote Frieren here, I don't think that her making it to the finals is unreasonable/ undeserved.
