The Oden flashback definitely assassinated Whitebeard’s character completely. I never recovered.
The whole thing that made Whitebeard cool was how he was willing to challenge anyone and everyone who messed with his sons. Buggy made it clear early on, it’s the iron law of the sea that you don’t fuck with Whitebeard’s men. Whitebeard was willing to fight to the death before he let anything happen to his family.
But as it turns out, you can literally torture and kill Whitebeard’s men as Kaido did, and Whitebeard will just forget about it.
And the absolutely pathetic excuse we got in canon… “how many civilians would die if we fought Kaido?” We know for a goddamn fact that Kaido would have met Whitebeard on any uninhabited island of Whitebeard’s choosing to settle the score for Oden.
But nah, either Whitebeard is just a straight up coward, or he didn’t care enough about Oden to even think for five seconds on how to avenge him without endangering civilians. Either way, Oda took everything that made Whitebeard great and set it on fire.
And don’t even get me started about how Teach physically resembling Rocks is about to make dumbfuckbeard look even more retarded. Like how the fuck would you sail with Rox for years, sail with Teach for years, and then just never put two and two together. It just goes to show that Oda is not a talented writer at all, and the longer this series goes on, the more Oda just ruins everything.
All agenda aside, I don’t hate Saint Shanks necessarily, he is just a completely shallow, boring, and one dimensional character who serves absolutely no purpose in this manga. Like really, am I supposed to be excited that Luffy is going to reunite with Saint Shanks some day? That’s a genuine question. I have never cared one iota for the “relationship” between Saint Shanks and Luffy. Saint Shanks losing his arm for Luffy was nice, but to me the core appeal of OP was always the adventure and the relationships between the Straw Hats. I never, at any point in my life, even remotely cared to see Luffy and Saint Shanks reunite.
That’s partially why I think it would be so cool if one of the four emperors of the pirate world was a world government plant and was manipulating Luffy from the start. It would make such a boring fanservice character much more interesting.
