Questions & Mysteries Is Zoro’s eye scar purely aesthetic

#1

Watsuki says he'd like to know why Zoro has become one-eyed, but ODA DOESN'T ANSWER THIS QUESTION...

Now many fans said it's just an aesthetic upgrade,

Zoro clearly doesn't use an eyepatch.

Zoro's eye has been shut since pre-time skip, and nobody in the crew batted an eye at that.

So if doing this is something kind of training or a power-up. What could it be?

We have swordsman who have scars over their eyes.

I don't know if Fujitora can be counted or not, because we know his injury is self-harm.
Also, Xebec's mark over his eyes is probably A tattoo.

I think it’s a byproduct of his training with shusui

I believe death and sacrifice play a main role in how black blades
  1. Mihawk’s life being taken by his blade with him managing to overcome death. Him becoming part of the blade (permanently black) and the blade becoming a sword a part of him (double ringed eyes)
  2. A significant woman in Aramaki’s life being taken by the blade he carries with her fully dying. Her life being what made the blade permanently black
  3. Issho while obviously not having a black blade might’ve also made a sacrifice of some sort aka his eyes. By doing so possibly being strengthened by his blade
    • Imo that might also be the case with shusui and zoro’s eye but with zoro not realizing. Same way he didn’t realize he had conquerors
So basically imo
  • A significant women is ryokugyu’s life sacrificed her life making ryokugyu’s blade stronger but not himself. Her being a part of the blade
  • Fujitora sacrificing his eyes made himself stronger but not his blade stronger. The blade being a part of him
  • Mihawk sacrificing his life made himself and his blade stronger. Both he and his blade being a part of each other

I wouldn't surprised if it isn't by how oda's writing OP so far. :suresure:

It's clearly a Rayleigh parallell, so yes, aesthetic. Also Sanji was curious about Zoro being one-eyed but any elaboration have been off screened.

Now I see this going one of two routes

1) Zoro opens his eye. It has been a training mechanism to improve his CoO. No opened eye before FS or something, same as no wine before CoA coated blade.

2) During a fight, perhaps against Mihawk, we get a flashback to how Zoro lost his eye and what he learned

The third route is that this never gets addressed but that would be a shame.

I'm not sure

But I think that if it was a power-up, if we go hundreds of chapters without it being mentioned, it would be normal to assume it was just aesthetic, even if it wasn't just aesthetic

100% it isn't aesthetic because its something oda planned and wouldnt give the reason why.
Remember mihawk doesnt fight an enemy if they have missing body parts like shanks with his arms and zoro would be the case if he has missing eye.

Who knows where its gonna lead up to but im 100% sure the eye isn't missing and he is gonna open as soon we get zoro/mihawk flashback
