Yeah saying she is the most beautiful everytime without justifying or having a good buildup about the character doesnt feel good

I dont think they knew. The entire point is he hid in the shadows and he intentionally kept a low profile, changed his name, had no bounty and so on.
Shanks referred to that and I believe when Lafitte was in Mariejois everyone else was also wondering cause why someone with no bounty should join the Shichi.
