I'm not sure about that tbh. We shouldn't underestimate Oda just because he isn't always 100% consistent in his 30 years old manga. The WG was an early and fleshed out concept and I assume the WG was always supposed to be evil (especially with the atrocities displayed early on), so a secret leader behind the WG wasn't far fetched. Especially with the void century also being a central theme we could connect back to the WG.
Davy Jones is also a central figure in piracy lore, so he kinda had to be included.
Well, I don't consider this a weakness in writing, and I even said before that the writer's dynamism is as creative as his ability to change the story. Every writer is consistent in two things: the beginning and the end of the story. Yes, WG was definitely going to have a hidden king, but IMU itself was definitely not in Oda's mind when the story was supposed to end in 5 years, and we weren't going to see something like G5 and ADVCOC. Joy Boy is a more key character, and it seems like Oda has been thinking about him for at least 10 years.
If Law was able to bust out of Doc Q's Fruit, but had to struggle a bit and blow through a lot of Haki, it's likely Kidd's Awakening would take a ton of Haki to blow through. Linlin probably chose to tank the attack, rather than try to bust out of it.
Voat has always struck me as gaving potential to be a power system.
One idea I had is if DR is a weaponized combination of haki + VOAT where Imu infuses the target with his haki and overrides their "voice" with his own.

After this chapter and the question that Rocks asked, I'm sure Joyboy really did some serious damage to Imu. I think Imu's body was completely destroyed and he only managed to save part of his body and somehow got a spell and can't get out of Mg.
