Chapter Discussion Becoming pirate king in old era =/= becoming pirate king in current era

Before god valley some clinged on to hope that Roger might distinguish himself among his era as the one and only the one above all pirates. In the end, not only did he absolutely require Garp chujo’s superior coc to stand a chance (he compensates with supreme grade sword Ace) 2v1, he also did not show anything beyond what OG yonko showed already haki-wise except for a majin vegeta self-KO haki burst

Dont get me wrong, Roger is still pretty strong:

-stalemated fruitless Primebeard
-Ducked BM smoke in her home turf to avoid all-out war
-Pushed Shiki were it not for storm saving him
-Clashed Garp many times and barely escaped with his life
-Beat Squardo pirates

The truth is: Becoming a pirate king in old era was about unlocking the secrets of the poneglyphs before anybody else knew how to. Strength had almost nothing to do with it. Nobody else knew how to achieve it. In current era everybody is gatekeeping poneglyph secrets and strength and fleets are required to neutralize yonko and marine gatekeepers. Many ppl misinterpreted it to mean Luffy achieving what Roger did but it’s about surpassing Roger‘s feat as Chinjao clearly put it

It’s hard to hear this but becoming a pirate king in the old era was an Usopp-tier intelligence feat

Elaborate nik-san:wonderland:
Let's go chronologically...

Recruited the strongest character in the show from the get go, been sailing on easy mode due to his strength.
Recruited the best navigator in the show from the get go as well, another contribution to easy mode campaign.
Same thing with the best cook in the world.

The best doctor came along to take care of his part.
Then came the only and the best archaeologist in the world who can take him there, instantly YUGE advantage.
Then came the best shipbuilder in the world, the Super Speedo guy.

A soul guide that knows the path between the afterlife and the land of the living also joined Luffy.
Then he got a crew member that basically rules the sea.
And I am sure the biggest coward in the world will also have a purpose that will be incredibly valuable.

On top of all that, he was literally handed over one of the Road Poneglyphs in Zou.
Pedro gave his life to get him out of dead end situation due to another RPG copy.

And then we have the special Devil Fruit that is most likely a must-have to be capable of using the treasure, which Roger couldn't.
Plus, he had tons of allies, which Roger never did. Roger's path was far, far harder.

Roger had Shiki, Whitebeard, Rocks, Big Mom, Kaido in his way. What are Luffy's obstacles compared to that?

Its the Special df isnt it

If this was the NBA

Rocks would be Wilt
Roger would be Russell

and guys like Luffy, Blackbeard, Law etc would be NBA players such as LeBron, Curry, KD etc.

The gap bred from the success of the previous era is too large

I had already made a post like this in the past — what Roger did was basically play soccer alone. There was no competition; no one at that time even knew about the Road Poneglyphs. The crews of the great pirates we have today (THE EMPERORS) were all still underdeveloped, while Roger’s crew was by far the most well-structured of that era, with all its members at their peak.

Not only were they underdeveloped but they went about it the wrong way. They assumed that it had to be done through sheer might (at least in Shiki, Linlin, and Kaido's paradigm). So that ended up being their focus. They assumed since Roger succeed "with an iron grip" they too think they had to do the same by playing catch up

I’ve said this since forever

It’s so obvious

Luffy’s path to becoming the Pirate King may not require as much time since he actually knows how to get there, but it’s significantly harder because now he has actual competition

2 Yonko each hold a Poneglyph, 1 is found on a moving Elephant, and the other hasn’t been seen in decades and only a small handful of people even have a lead on it

Roger cakewalked to 3/4 of the Poneglyphs needed to find the One Piece. He found one with no issue chilling in FMI, one was in Zou, and he had the prince of Wano to give him easy access to the 3rd one

Luffy had to wage war against 2 Yonko for a single poneglyph

Roger’s biggest and strongest pirate rival literally handed him the keys to the One Piece

Night and day comparison

They only started thinking that way after Roger. In fact, Roger’s death made things even worse for them — after all, he created far more competition and made his treasure and the One Piece known, causing pirates from all over the world to set sail in search of it. That kind of massive demand didn’t exist in his time. Whitebeard, a great pirate from that era, proved it by laughing at Roger’s idea — an idea that later became the very thing that put Roger’s bounty above his own. So technically, as I’ve always said, becoming Pirate King in the current era is much harder than it was in Roger’s time. It’s not about matching Roger when you become Pirate King, but about surpassing him by doing so.
