The Admirals have special privileges being based on Oda’s idols in his youth
To some extent I understand, but he does write them exceptionally well compared to the other cast
I hope when people suggest more elaborate fights, they also mean a major reduction in side characters because you cant have both and expect to be where we are now in the story lol.
That said, I dont think Id trade the Supernova, Shichibukai, Straw Hat Fleet or even the Scabbards (fuck Oden though lol) for things like that, characters we know to be later creations in the story
While I hate useless garbage like that randome Donquixote chick with the fucking vacuum cleaner, supporting cast is what makes this series to me, so Im okay with 1-2 chapter fights for people not named Luffy.
That said, I agree with the direct lack of Strawhats spearheading chapters at the expense of island inhabitants. Chopper and Usopp barely feel like characters anymore, and I've long given up on expecting anything from them.
It used to be we'd have 3-4 POVs on allies at most per arc. Now we have like 10-12 lol
Example:
- Alabasta: Robin (kinda), Vivi, Cobra, Koza, Pell/Chaka (barely). The villain group is ~6 strong.
- Skypiea: Gan Fall, Conis/Her Father, Aisa, Wyper and his group (but mostly him). The villain group is ~5 ish strong.
- Water 7: Franky, Iceberg, Kokoro, Paulie (and the rest of Galley-La) fundamentally not much here since everyone else turned bad. CP9 is 7 strong.
Compare to.....
- Dressrosa: Rebecca, Violet, Bellamy, Kyros, Law, Kinemon, Riku, Caesar, like 20+ colosseum characters that ended up being allies, and Dwarves. Doflamingo has like 15 fucking crew members if you count Vergo and Monet. And ironically only half the crew is here. Also Fujitora is a huge presence in the arc.
- WCI: Bege, Jinbe + Sun Pirates, Pudding, Carrot/Pedro, the other half of the crew, plus a stupid amount of BMP designs that take up countless panels and space.
- Wano: 9 scabbards, Shinobu, Momo, Hiyori, Yasue (before death), Tengu/Sukiyaki, Hyougoro, Marco, Drake, Kid and Law vs Orochi and his Onibawanshu/Mimiwarigumi, Hawkins, Numbers, Flying 6 (5), 3 Calamities, 2 Yonko and a stupid amount of fodder.
You get the pattern.
Funny enough, its almost like Oda caught himself during Egghead since after hyping Vice Admirals he basically noped them from relevance once the Gorosei showed up lol, but that arc has the same type of bloat with the same type of sacrifices towards giving most characters relevancy
