We have Zoro and Sanji doing this to dinosaurs two arcs later after Arlong was beaten:
The hippo would just be a small snack for the t-rex.
Luffy one shots sea kings in the first chapters. Those would be gigantic terrifying monsters in our world and any decent East Blue pirate would easily deal with them. Even Alvida.
I can't believe it, this guy thinks Alvida cannot even deal with a hippo when she is part of a large world with animals easily dwarfing that hippo in both weigth and size.

Mate, if mass mattered in One Piece then 5ft 8 Luffy wouldn't be one shotting multi ton Giants like 22 metres tall (72ft) Hajrudin.
The mass argument is irrelevant for a superhuman One Piece character.

Hippos are one of Africa's most dangerous and physically resilient large animals. To understand why the weapons fail, let's break down the hippo's defenses.
🦛 The Hippo's Natural Defenses
· Skin: Up to 2 inches (5 cm) thick, with a tough, rubbery hide that is difficult to penetrate and highly resistant to blunt force.
· Skull & Bone Structure: Extremely dense and thick bones, particularly in the skull, which can deflect blows and bullets.
· Fat & Muscle Layer: A massive subcutaneous fat layer and powerful muscles act as additional shock absorbers.
· Aggression & Vital Areas: A charging hippo presents a low, angled head, making its already thick skull the primary target. Its vital organs are well-protected within its barrel-shaped body.
⚔️ Weapon Analysis: Kanabō (Iron Mace)
The Kanabō is a historically devastating weapon against armored humans and structures. However, it is poorly suited for this task.
· Weapon Strengths: Designed to crush armor and break wooden gates through sheer blunt force.
· Against Hippo Defenses: The hippo's combination of thick skin, a heavy fat layer, and immensely dense bones would absorb and disperse the impact of a bludgeoning attack. Even a powerful swing would likely cause superficial bruising at best, failing to reach vital organs or cause fatal skull trauma. The spikes might tear the skin, but wouldn't create a deep, lethal wound.
Verdict: Highly ineffective. It would anger the hippo but not kill it.
🔫 Weapon Analysis: Flintlock Pistol
A typical black-powder flintlock pistol is wholly inadequate against an animal of this size.
· Weapon Limitations: Low muzzle velocity, inaccurate, and fires a relatively small, low-energy round ball.
· Against Hippo Defenses: The ball would likely fail to penetrate the hippo's thick hide and underlying fat layer. Even a lucky hit to the head would probably ricochet off the dense skull. It could not reach the brain or heart.
Verdict: Completely useless.
⚖️ Final Verdict
To kill an adult hippo, you would need a modern, high-powered rifle with appropriate ammunition, requiring precise shot placement.
Neither of Alvida's weapons, operating under realistic constraints, is capable of achieving this.
