Imu was affected by Joyboy's burst because Abyss mark transferred it from Egghead to Mariejois.
So he was hit directly or his powers were directly negated, either way, he was affected by a burst.
And that is a key detail, burst. Nobody in GV used it, they used direct coating to attack an avatar.

Thats also why Xebec wanted Harald to eat the DF to unlock its true potential. I guess that the Nika form unlocks its true potential when the personality of its user fits its nature. Pure heaeded, freedom loving, kind and childish soul. Someone like Shanks, Blackbeard and Kaido could never unlock the Nika form. Only Luffy could.

Was the clash a friendly clash or a clash in a real fight? Likely joyboy wanted the King of war to join the alliance and the king wanted to test joyboys power. Like Zoro and loki, he would not serve under someone who is weaker.
