Since the speculation about Loki's DF started and that panel dropped
I asked myself: if he's really Nidhogg, why would Oda choose to go for Lightning in specific? It ain't that special right. Lightning and fire is somewhat overused and it's a legendary DF afterall.
He could have also went with a made up inverse element, that's busted, and it would have made sense. But then it hit me and I think I cracked the code.
Nidhogg in contrary to the Azure Dragon has wings. Hybrid creatures with a humanoid shape and wings were always depicted as incredibly fast
They have top notch mobility and movement speed. And I doubt Oda would make an exception for the legendary Nidhogg fruit.
And that's where the lightning ability kicks in.
Oda has patterns and one recent pattern is, that mythical creatures with an elemental ability coat themselves in their element for different purposes
He even uses the same concept for advanced CoC
And he used it before for an actual lightning ability with Niji
And it led to a significant speed boost. Oda even went for a name like "lightspeed blade".
And it's not really that uncommon. A lightning cloak is a common idea in other mangas aswell
The lightning cloak concept is even the basis for Killua's godspeed ability. And with that in mind it suddenly makes a lot of sense why he chose to make Nidhogg a lightning dragon: it gives the user super speed.
I think the lightning cloak on top of the rest is what's going to make this fruit, even when eaten by a human, one of the best, if not the best fruit in the series in terms of overall power, versatility, traditional strength and style.
I think it's going to be the fruit, that we will put onto fruit less top tiers to imagine their highest potential.
Thanks for reading.
