To me, more than Russia it's Trump who exposed NATO in last one year or you can say dented it so much that it would take years if not decades to build the trust again.

Put Obama in place of Trump and undo last one year of mess Trump created with the alliances all over the world and I think we would have seen entire West actively helping US in destroying Iran.
No one wants Iran to have Nuclear weapon. And, yes it all starts with civil Nuclear energy programme which Iran was actively pursuing.
And, now Trump unintentionally enhanced geoplotical importance of Iran. Since the day news broke out that Chinese and Indian ships are passing through Hormuz, more countries have reached out to Iran and they are getting their ships going through.
America's long term partners are simply refusing to take part in the mess USA created and are putting their interests first - like America did in past one year through Tariffs.
