Anti-Ronaldo PR is all time high.

People are saying Ronaldo is simply a liability for the current Portuguese team but idolo will prove them wrong
He's not a liability but a great asset.

However, with players as big as Ronaldo, management often build team around them.

So, just presence of Ronaldo is enough to make management build team around him.

It's a good thing and it happens with all the big players.

But issue with Ronaldo is he plays upfront more whereas Messi has pulled himself back.

So we have young and aspiring players of Portugal setting up goals for out of peak Ronaldo and we have Argentina team in which ageing Messi himself plays immense role in setting up goals for young players.

Ronaldo needs to pull himself back and this Portugal team might perform better than people expect. But we all know he won't.

It's liability in a sense that Ronaldo defensive contribution is non existent.

Modern coaches are very tactical and expect all players to do defensive work so when aging player can't do so and run for 90 minutes, 1-2 players need to close that defensive gap.

This is why Ten Hag benched Ronaldo back then, he wanted Ronaldo to be "Super Sub" But Ronaldo don't want that

Ronaldo lethal finishing is his saving grace and if it's hit or miss then it's just liability.

I don't think it has to do with defenses.

It's more related to he can't press like when he was in prime and his involvement in build up of chances outside the box is less as well.

Ronaldo has become a player who's just about finishing whereas other players have to do most of the running, pressing, defending to create chances and feed the ball to Ronaldo to finish. Even in that case he's losing touch.

So, building a team around such player doesn't make sense.

A young, aspiring and decent player simply offers more to the team in this regard. For a manager, this provides tactical flexibility.

That's why I think Ronaldo has to fall back like Messi did and focus more on creating chances than scoring goals. But he won't do it.

Ronaldo was never a playmaker though. Not even in his United days. He did have a knack for the last pass then but as a prpduct of a counter attack.
To be a playmaker you need to play through the middle of the field, which he has never done.
His strength now lays in his experience, positioning, and air game - all areas that can be usrful in the last stretch of a game when you need to decide the game.
The only mistake they can make with him, in my opinion, is play him every game from the first minute.

Yeah that's what I mean too.

And Portugal can't afford to "park the bus" with Ronaldo playing, so they are tactically limited

His experience regarding positioning and finishing is unparalleled.

But the lack of pressing and carrying the ball long distances or winning it back, leaves rest of the players do all the work just to feed him the ball. It just imbalances the team especially in highly competitive tournaments or leagues.

It affects team game and also kind of create discontent amongst other players.

Him playing for 30 mins with pressing would be more valuable to the Portugal team than him playing 90 mins near or inside the box.

Yeah that's what I mean too.

If they seek national glory then they have to take decisions which are best suited to win the game.

If they went with "Oh it's Ronaldo so we have to him in the team" then they won't last long.
