Break Week Imu power-cliffing the verse makes sense from a historical perspective

What does Loki have to do with anything? I have said since his intro that he was the strongest character in Elbaf, above Luffy or Gaban. I really like his character.

Doesn't mean I have to put him or Imu at god tier level for no apparent reason.
'Twas but a jape, my lord.

I was just joking that Shanks was fraudulently hyping Imu to upscale Loki because he's secretly a Loki fanboy.

It wasn't targeted at you in any way, sorry if it came off that way lol.

It also makes sense from a narrative standpoint

Imu and his followers are hidden villains, they do not exist within the boundaries of what was the established order

the reason why characters like Croc can’t be weaker than 1 pacifista is because if that was the case he’d be of no value to the world government

the reason why the admirals can be weaker than let’s say Garling is because Garling does not deal with worldly affairs, the admirals have a value to serve as the front facing army of the WG.

Yes his abilities are indeed beyond comprehension. But haki can cancel this. Hence why Shanks now have haki compared to JB haki who had Imu shivering and shaking like a bitch. What does that mean?

力=Strenght/power in general
Shanks says Imu's overall strenght is unfathomable, there's no mention of specific abilities.
Imu is both top 1 in strenght and hax. No top tier haki can do shit to Imu and Shanks himself is aware of it.

I believe that in the end, Imu, Kaidou, Ryuma, Mihawk, Joyboy, and Shanks are all at a fairly similar level, but with a slight edge going to whoever trusts that haki can transcend everything. It's natural for there to be this initial hype when Imu is introduced, it's the same with every villain: Kaidou landing a hit on Luffy, Lucci landing a hit on Luffy, Crocodile doing the same thing. The first round always belongs to the villain, it's in the second and third rounds that we actually see the boy turn into a man and things start to feel serious. Sanji having to unlock Conqueror's Haki to deal with his opponent and with one of the weapons of the world's founding kings, and if you stop to think about it, Conqueror's Haki is already something most top tiers have, so what we're really going to see here is how its usability plays out in order to triumph over this new power.

The conclusion both Sanji and Zoro are going to reach here in order to beat their opponent, assuming they don't get a power up, could just as easily be reached by the others too. It would be a problem if it were something only they had, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

In the end, Imu won't seem all that strong once we find out what's actually required to neutralize him, and that's when you'll realize those same resources already exist in Kaidou, the most complete warrior in the series.

Wrong.

One piece current top tiers is what the ceiling look like.

Imu is an exception because he's literal king of order that's lasting 800 years old in the world full of raging beasts. Sea level risings will not nerf you, lack of technology also will not nerf because we are have devil fruits that's still exists which is a massive boost compared to any technology

Imu also likely got the Hax factor

Imu and the 18 kings fought a brutal century long war against Joy Boy and his forces in addition to snakes like Lily

There won't anyone strong as IMU, EOS Luffy and JB again

Good thread mate ^^
Have similar thoughts on this as well and I think the hint to the evolution of abilities going forward in the series is this so called Maki that Oda's just introduced to us via Imu.

Had a similar discussion with the fam in Sanji FC as well not too long ago and imo there's a reson why Maki feels so much like Haki even down to it's definition even though it's appears to be much more powerful and versatile so like you said I reckon the next stage for our protagonists would be to learn how to apply Haki like Imu does.

One ting that stands out to me with Imu's definition of Maki is that he says and I quoute "Maki is Mu's military strength" so reckon this so called Maki is a type of Haki application that is unique to Imu himself. Kinda feels like a unison of his devil fruit and his Haki and it coincidently enough it fits if you combine the two words together. 悪(Akuma) + 覇 (Haki).

So maybe this is the next evolution of Haki in the series.
It's one thing to be able to manifest and wield haki and conqueror's haki in general but maybe the next step is to actually make this into something unique to yourself.

For example like Imu's Maki, considering Luffy's a god, to contrast Imu, he might develop God Ki or something like that which like Imu could be a sort of devil fruit Haki unison with the Nika fruit.

In Zoro's case for example, it could be a type of Haki + Sword unison and who knows maybe this in itself is how black blades are created.

In Sanji's case I reckon it's gonna have to do with this so called PoL ability that Oda went out of his way to establish, one arc ago on Egghead.

I know it's a shit ton of unique abilities but can't shake the feeling that this going to be the path forward for our protagonists in order to be able to combat Imu.

Lastly, on devil fruits I think this whole idea of hidden mysteries is gonna be how Oda makes the Blackbeard Pirates a formidabble force maybe with a stage 2 awakening of devil fruits or something like that. Hell the fact that Teach is able to possess more than one devil fruit in itself might not simply be something unique to his body but rather ancient knoweldege that he has that nobody else does in which case we could very well see the Blackbeard Pirates all have multiple Devil Fruits going forward.

Just food for thought ^^

Yes, Imu is indeed currently the most powerful character in the series. However, the nature of why he is so powerful is what's important. And the nature of Imu's power is that he is a parasite.

The key to all of this was when Harald died. When the suggestion to send more Holy Knights was raised, Imu shut that down in such a way that indicated he was scared to do so. Because the Covenant is not only the key to his power, but his life. Imu feeds off the souls of those he bonds with the Covenant, so the less of them they are, the weaker he is.

Another key is whenever he showed up, people say his Haki is abnormal, first and foremost. It's not merely very strong, but there's something wrong with it. And if Haki is a power of the soul, what they sense is Imu's soul....covered with the remnants of the souls of all the Holy Knights he has devoured.

So, in the end, Imu's power all boils down to simply having a Devil Fruit that allows the user to gain power by claiming the souls of those who allow him to. He is, in the end, a up jumped tick or mosquito.

What's so funny about that? Joy Boy's haki which was compared to Shanks haki had Imu shaking and shivering like a bitch.

So a Shanks or Mihawk going all out (they should be comparable) could absolutely be stronger or very close to Imu.
We’ve got a very special user over here. Shanks’ haki will not be close to Joyboy’s haki at all. Oda was deliberately conservative in his verbal wank when he first hinted at a god-tier level of haki/power. He only truly revealed the gap during Xebec’s flashback.

If Oda had already established that Joyboy completely eclipsed top-tiers like Shanks, the reveal of Imu effortlessly neg-diffing Xebec (stronger than Shanks) and practically everybody else won’t be effective. Xebec had to be built up as the pinnacle first, alongside guys like the pirate king and Garp, so he could serve as the perfect hype tool. Otherwise, every reader would have already assumed that Xebec would be insignificant to Imu.

Yonko or currently known characters of the world are not meant to be the strongest of all. Narratively it was established to be Imu and Joyboy until Luffy surpasses that. It isnt that deep really or complicated. Been reading shonen manga and One Piece for how long and that still isnt obivous?

Then one is leading by their favorite characters, not the obvious logic. This is the beginning of Imu the same way Kaido was set up as a saga. Blackbeard could be interestingly used for plot twists and emotional weight the fanbase cares about, so Oda has two major antagonists who are also against each other.

Thats interesting.

Disclaimer: This thread is not intended to be anything profound. Rather, I want to highlight something intuitive that I hadn't given much thought until recently.

I've seen a fair amount of people clinging onto the old gen top tiers even after Imu's full reveal. I'm not sure if this is about resistance to power-creep or simply a deep love for the OGs. But I believe that, compared to other prominent shonen, One Piece's power-creep can actually be rather smooth. I say this as someone who thinks that current One Piece is dogshit and Oda is so washed that your local laundromat is asking him for his secret.

Anyway, the main point:

What are the main ways that someone becomes a competent fighter in One Piece? Aside from innate abilities (including but not limited to Devil Fruits and race-based powers), I would say that training, knowledge and experience account for the vast majority of one's power level.

We know that the Ancient Kingdom was so advanced that even Vegapunk had trouble understanding their creations. This implies that they had access to a wealth of information that is probably unquantifiable. How is this relevant? Because it is highly likely that this included a much deeper, much more comprehensive understanding of both haki and Devil Fruits, and potentially other unexplored abilities (for example, Maki/Omen). As a result, the fighters at the time would have been significantly more knowledgeable than even the old gen top tiers like Garp, Ray and Gaban who seem to know everything about combat.

On top of this, we know for a fact that the technology present in the Ancient Kingdom make the modern ones look like child's play. Between the Ancient Weapons, Emeth, and now the legendary weapons wielded by the 20 Kings, we've seen firsthand how this technological sophistication bleeds directly into warfare. Imagine how strong you would've needed to be in order to compete with stuff like this. If anything, Imu's strength was a necessary adaptation.

When you put all of this together, it is very easy to see why Imu is as strong as he is. His contemporaries had the best technology, the best understanding of haki and Devil Fruits, the best weapons, and consequently the best overall skills - of all time. Furthermore, we know that haki blooms in the heat of battle (i.e., experience makes you a LOT stronger). Imu, Joyboy, the 19 Kings, and all the top tiers of their era - fought in the biggest war ever. They already had all the ingredients to become God tiers compared to the current era, but when you throw in the experience card, it reinforces this idea even more.

However, everything from that era was utterly erased. All the technology, all the knowledge, all the weapons -- completely buried and eventually forgotten. So what does this mean? It means that for the last 800 (900?) years, the top tiers have been playing catch-up. They are all essentially like primitive cavemen to someone like Imu, despite existing chronologically later. Their ceilings are capped because of their limited access to information.

Once Luffy and *his* contemporaries rediscover everything the Ancient Kingdom knew and had access to, they will be able to surpass everyone who came before them, by a country mile. And it will quite honestly be logically justifiable.

TLDR:
The powercreep makes sense because Imu comes from an era marked by the absolute pinnacle of knowledge as well as the pinnacle of fighting experience (war). Knowledge translates directly into fighting prowess (technology, optimization of abilities, etc.) while experience is the quickest way to improve, so Imu's power-level is understandable. The current gen has significantly less knowledge and experience in comparison to the point that they are fairly primitive. When Luffy's gen gains all the knowledge and war experience of the Ancient Kingdom, they will be able to catch up to Imu's gen.

Makes a lot of sense but also this "regression" of modern era isn't exactly new to OP. Lots of stories have had settings where ancient civilizations vastly outclass modern society in terms of technology and military power, and the information lost due to war or some shit

Era of gods also in general far more powerful than era of men the angle Oda shooting for. This a common mythology trope among humans too

In the end everything is just a fragment of the power that the gods left behind. Humans or mortals can touch it but never catch up to gods in their prime, that's just the way it is

No they didn’t, they questioned if it was even stronger. And it is, I’ve given the reason why Oda didn’t outright throw Shanks under the bus compared to Joyboy level characters. The appropriate timing for that was during Xebec’s flashback.

Even if you just look at Joyboy‘s haki feat from beyond the grave, it royally shits on anything Shanks has ever shown. His haki even knows who to target, while Shanks keeps knocking out his own crew.

Joyboy's haki display, gathered for his friend Emeth, was mentioned in the same breath as Shanks casually freezing an Admiral in place for a prolonged period. If anything, Shanks feat is many times better because it lasted a lot longer than Joyboy's while achieving the same thing - stripping top tiers of their DF abilities. The only difference is that Joyboy's wasnt directed to one target specifically, while Shanks' was.
