I would say that materialism is a metric to measure it by. So precise in fact that science pretty much uses this framework constantly.

This is where we differ. I don't want a marxist world. I want voluntary collectivism through personal responsibility rather than government mandated contributions. It's why I've always said unified families are the best example of 'communism' that can work. However, I don't want overbearing systems that mandate human control as that erodes the value I am seeking.
