I would find it very odd if gaban dies here given oda is already unusually brutal with chopping his arm off.
Its probally Loki or something else, i mean there is some shenigang with the sunrealm maybe some of the giants getting something fromt here idk

Law lost a arm vs don but it get put back on . ( no he was not handicapped during that fight )
Kuzan lost his leg fighting Akainu .
Kiku lost her arm vs Kaido .
WB lost part of his head vs Akainu.
Jozu lost arm after he get beat by Kuzan .
Perospero lost arm when pedro blow up him self .

It happens and like i said it great way to show off Imu .
