Character Discussion When weekly hypes are settled down, it is still clear old Rayleigh > old Gaban

They are same Chess Piece just redesigned & repurposed,
Oda wanted to create that Old Man who represents Peak Human (No Lineage Factor Buff), but the World is so vast, & the Journey is Linear, He ended up needing to make multiple characters who represent that same Concept & Position,

Xebec, Roger, Gaban, Oden, Rayleigh, Garp are same to me, I don't even consider them separate characters,
Think of them as same Actor playing different Roles.

Personally, I don't care about any of them (Aside from certain preferences for them Character Wise), cuz they are either Oldies with Sacrifice Kink or Flashback Relics, their representatives from Present Story are Shanks & Beckman, those are True Hype & whom Oda gonna use to show us True Limit (Current) of Humans without any Lineage Factor Modification.

Don't let weekly hypes blind your casual eyes. When weekly hypes are settled down, it is still clear that old Rayleigh's portrayal is levels above old Gaban's.

Let's take a look on old Rayleigh's resume:
- Fought Admiral Kizaru and looked better among the 2 (Kizaru was frustrated)
- Accompanied Luffy to Marineford to ring the bell
- Became Luffy's mentor during 2 years timeskip training
- Once again interrupted the Marine during post timeskip reunion
Let me repeat: this grandpa interrupted the Marine twice, fought an Admiral once, invaded Marineford once, and still living rent free in old Garp's memory. Yet there is no consequence to him at all. The Marine even in Sakazuki's command never dare to approach him despite his history.
- Scared Teach and chased him off from Amazon Lily, leaving Mero Mero no Mi he really wanted behind. Sure, old Rayleigh was lucky there because Garp killers duo Shiryu and Aokiji weren't present.
And his resume most likely will still go longer because he is still alive and healthy.

Now look at old Gaban's resume:
- Fought Luffy 1 vs 1, but as soon as Zoro offered to help and about to change the battle into 2 vs 1, Gaban surrendered
- Has Future Sight but still couldn't prevent Holy Jobber Gunko from kidnapping his fodder crying son (for comparison, Roger's son Ace was strong since he was a kid, unlike Gaban's fodder crybaby)
- Surrendered once again to Holy Jobber Gunko and got quickly one shotted
- Got low diffed by post gauntlet Imu and lost his arm
And his resume most likely will end here, considering he is at best already crippled now, and at worse I am not even sure he can leave this arc alive.

TLDR:
When you see old Rayleigh, you remember his feats of fighting Kizaru, Luffy's mentor and chasing Blackbeard away.
When you see old Gaban, you remember his multiple surrenders and one sided low diff fight against tired, injured Imu.
Rayleigh was important character since pre timeskip, and still is. Gaban will be important in Elbaf arc only.

This is just a biased post that doesn't achieve much, it's clear what Gabans portrayal is.

It's also clear what Rayleigh portrayal is. You could say Ray is 2nd strongest, but then Gaban is only really 0.5 points behind, but being 0.5 points behind doesn't even mean you're guaranteed to lose a fight, that doesn't mean you lose 10/10 times.

And given how much emphasis Oda has put into the Wings of The Pirate King, it's clear that the difference is so small it doesn't matter. And if we go with the position that they are better at different things, like how sanji and zoro is looking like, then you can argue they are equal overall but have better stats than the other in different departments.

It would not surprise me if Scopper has more brute strength, and ray is more skilled for example. But either way Prime Ray vs Prime Gaban is not anything besides an Extreme diff of the highest level. Gaban even as an old man is competitive enough till this day to say he's number 2, because it's clear that he would never admit he's weaker than Ray, because he is too strong willed.

But both have no problem admitting they are both weaker than Their Captain, which just tells you what kind of man Roger is. The difference between Ray and Gaban is blurry but the line that separates them from Roger is clear, even if they can stand shoulder to shoulder with him.

If you think about it, Ray and Gaban could be just as strong as Roger in terms of stats, but because they have admitted their inferiority due to whatever unique attributes Roger possessed, they will always see themselves as weaker than him. Even if there was only a 2 point difference in reality between Roger and ray/gaban, that difference is so stark that Roger will win every time.

Roger was just born to win it's that simple, he warps reality around him which is why lighting strikes conveniently just like with Luffy. He was meant to be a leader of leaders, that's why people as strong as Ray and Gaban follow him when they could make their own crews and compete with Roger if they really wanted to.

Ran away from narrative and portrayal for years, clinging to feats. Now that the sanctuary has been dismantled, they’re running back to narrative and portrayal, but it seems like these people have forgotten why they ran away from it in the first place. The anti Sanji/Gaban agenda loses either way. You’re stuck between the rock that is the Right/Left/Wings rivalry dynamic, which places these characters on an even keel, and the hard place of an injured, older Gaban having superior feats.

Why is that ? Kizaru was obviously stronger than Nika since he was the one still standing (fed Luffy), was able to complete his mission (Killed VP) and made it out unscathed.
Teach is not a pussy either, he is calculated and doesn't take unecessary risks; He is a Yonko afterall and was able to consolidate WB territories and more with sheer strength.
