Theory Shanks is a devil fruit user..

#1
i-------------->.

There is one scene in the very first chapter that never quite added up to me..

It is the moment when Shanks saves Luffy from the Sea King. We suddenly see that Shanks has lost his arm, and we naturally assume that the Sea King was the one that bit it off..

But there is something about that scene that always made me wonder..how could one of the most powerful characters in the series, a master of Haki, lose an entire arm so easily to a Sea King???..

So I started thinking...

What if the Sea King wasn't actually the one who cut off Shanks' arm???..What if Shanks did it himself??

And what if the reason goes back to a secret we have never been told...What if Shanks was already a Devil Fruit user??

We know that Devil Fruit powers are connected to the user's body. In my theory, the Devil Fruit's energy interacts with the heart's electromagnetic field, with the heart acting as an interface that allows the power to flow through the body..

And this could also explain the greatest weakness of Devil Fruit users : The sea..

The sea suppresses Devil Fruit users, causing them to lose their strength and eventually become unable to move..If Shanks was already a Devil Fruit user, then he would have known exactly what would happen when he entered the sea to save Luffy.
He would become weak and sink..

So what if Shanks had discovered a way to bypass that weakness??..

What if cutting off his own arm disrupted the flow of Devil Fruit energy through his body???...

Think of it like someone who is falling asleep. If you shake them hard enough, you can suddenly interrupt that state and wake them up..
In the same way, Shanks could have deliberately severed his arm to violently disrupt the connection through which the sea was suppressing his Devil Fruit power..

He wasn't overpowering the sea..He was tricking the mechanism..

But there is another way we can look at this.
If the sea truly "hates" Devil Fruit users and forces them into a state of weakness, making them sink to the bottom of the sea, perhaps the sea itself allows a way to bypass that suppression..

But there is a price..An arm..Or perhaps even a leg..

Maybe the sea will allow a Devil Fruit user to escape its grip, but only after taking something from them in return..

So perhaps Shanks wasn't simply sacrificing his arm to save Luffy...Perhaps he was paying the price demanded by the sea in order to bypass its power..

It's almost as if the sea is saying: "I'll let you escape my grip and swim, Devil Fruit user... but only if you give me one limb in return."

Throughout the story, we have seen characters survive the loss of limbs and continue fighting. Arms and legs can be sacrificed, replaced, or even turned into weapons...(maybe they figured out the same trick)..

( also luffy's rubber being hard to cut would somehow fit in )..

Another reason I believe Shanks might already be a Devil Fruit user is this:

In Chapter 1, Shanks had the Gomu Gomu no Mi in his possession, yet he never ate it.

Wouldn't that suggest that he may have already eaten a Devil Fruit???..

Maybe that's why he never ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi in the first place..

Perhaps Shanks was trying to figure out a way to eat a second Devil Fruit without dying
Just like Blackbeard..

I believe he does have a devil fruit as well and thats because of Shamrock pulling up with a mythical sword, its typical in shounen for twins to be depicted as equal and sharing a lot of similarities that go even further than just appearance. The hints from film red, the confrontation of Kid in the anime, the Shamrock connection, and the mythology of Nidhogg having a feud with an Eagle, all give me the impression Shanks has a mythical sword in Gryphon, a creature thats made of an eagle and lion. Shanks can benefit from a devil fruit without worrying about falling in the water. Makes sense when you consider how he bounced back so quick after losing an arm or why Mihawk isn’t interested in dueling him, or why Oda put ambiguity about “how he really fights” when introducing the name of his sword. To me its a forgone conclusion.
