Truth is Zoro entered the battle against Kaido in far worse condition than Gaban's.
Zoro tanked Hakai, combined attack of 2 Top Tiers and got broken bones. Gaban tanked Holy Bum Gunko's attack. Hakai >>>> Gunko

And the end result is Zoro's perfomance is still better than Gaban. Both Kaido and Imu acknowledged their opponents, but:
Gaban lost an arm, Zoro didn't
Imu avoided Gaban's attack, Kaido couldn't avoid Asura

Because Oda wanted Gaban to reference an event that the audience was aware of.
