General & Others Feats never mattered. Stop it

Picking the worst examples. I've rarely ever seen a shonen author be so aware of what their characters should be capable off in their specific power system. Oda gives excuses over excuses to the fans when a character isn't performing as he's expected to. Panel above is the perfect example.

Oda tells the reader that Zoro is just fucking around and once the leash was off, this happened:

Oda lets us know when a character is nerfed all the time to either whether it’s due to damage or, mental, age, sickness or environment. That doesn’t change the fact that feats themselves don’t matter and never have

? That’s not what ha

Same as with Lucci Zoro was trying to end the fight as soon as he could due to how dire the situation was. Tho in both cases he needed an extra boost to finally land an attack aka Kiku’s arm and Sanji’s insult

Why ignore the fact that Fujitora handled a weaker attack than Denjiro handled but worse despite being immensely stronger

Feats matter so much to Oda that he came out and said he doesn't draw naval battles because it doesn't make sense when his characters are so much stronger.
That argument makes no sense at all tbh. Especially when even early on in the story we weren’t getting naval battles. The closest we get is just characters directing destroying ships

oh but when i say that oda doesn't care about scaling..
Oda clearly cares a lot about power scaling but he clearly never cared about feats the same way power scalers do

Again Zoro and Sanji or Kid and Law or Shanks and Blackbeard or Rayleigh and Gaban are clear examples of Oda caring about power scaling but not about feats

The only time feats “matter” is when those feats are tied to a statement. Like “oh character A is even stronger or faster or more durable or has even more stamina or whatever than character B”
But even then that doesn’t matter to much because having a specific better ability doesn’t change overall portrayal. Like Gaban likely has better observation haki than Rayleigh which is cool and all that but doesn’t change anything

The point is focusing on the feats makes no sense when it comes to actually scaling

Rayleigh and Gaban probably being the best recent example
Based on portrayal it’s obvious that Rayleigh is stronger than Gaban and that no matter what feats Gaban has he’ll still be below Rayleigh. The only thing that would actually change that is if we get statements outright saying shit like “Gaban was secretly stronger then he let on back in the day and was secretly holding back”or that “Rayleigh aged significantly worse than Gaban and maybe even got sick”.

Point is we know based off of portrayal that they’re close in strength with Rayleigh being stronger. No feats would ever change that. The only thing that can change that is new statements changing how they’re portrayed
Close. That's not scaling, that's narrative. We know that Rayleigh would be the one directly under Roger because the story tells us and it's how the characters see him, even if it's arguable. Although we also know that who's stronger between them actually doesn't matter.

The problem with scaling is that you put other things to scale. Like how you then generalize it to Sanji and Zoro even though they're different characters.
