Tbh there's been a bunch of character and/or ability developement for the SHs this arc (Robin, Zoro, Brook, now Sanji) which is something the community usually complains lacks in current OP.

I hope by the end of the the others (especially Franky, Chopper and Jinbe) also have some kind of personal growth or hone their abilities.

Oh, it definitely has ties to his upbringing with the Vinsmokes.

He is even surprised when NightmareIva appears because he thought it would be the Vinsmokes instead.

I agree its because of his abuse by his family. But that doesn't mean Sanji wants to die because he is related to Vinsmokes. Not one dialogue about how he us related to a evil family or how I don't deserve to live because i am a vinsmoke.
