Hello friends,

As chapter 1000 approaches, let us recount some of the most memorable moments in One Piece. To be clear, I am not referring to iconic scenes such as the Straw Hats' X mark farewell to Vivi, Robin's 'I wanna live' or Ace's 'thank you for loving me', which seem more like the products of a bygone era. I am referring to the moments that made you want to bleach your brain, smash your monitor or throw your phone out of the window. Let's recount the moments that truly made you cringe.

My top 5

1. Even if you die, don't die

^ Actual visuals from the anime of this scene

This was the moment I knew that Luffy's character derailment was truly complete. He actually used to have moments of clarity, slapping Vivi and reminding her that excessive idealism gets you nowhere in the world of pirates. There is no war without sacrifice, and Luffy understood that when others around him were being naive. Fast forward 800 chapters and we get... this. What the actual fuck.

2. Sexual assault is so funny!11!!

Because nothing screams nakama power like molesting your crewmate against her will, and the story making a joke out of it while she cries in embarrassment. 10/10 comedy Oda.

3. Cosplay gone too far

I have a great idea for a new character. Wanna hear it? Here goes. A delusional young woman whose entire character revolves around being delusional, adapting her mannerisms, style of dress and personality around a bloke whose diary she probably cuddles to sleep at night. As part of her very significant character arc, I will have her chase a wounded, traumatised 8 year old boy around a chaotic battlefield while screaming that she is his deceased father.

Characterisation level = George RR Martin x 10000000

4. Big Meme

One Piece has long received criticism for its portrayal of women. Making the only female yonko into the butt of jokes and gag moments is truly not improving this perception. So far, we have a character who is:

  • infantile
  • lacks agency - is tossed around like a rag doll by PIS and other contrivances (Fuck the amnesia plotline)
  • negative IQ - 'what did I lose?' - uh, Jinbe, for one? Hello?
  • Humiliated by the plot, run over by Franky and Brook of all people.
This scene is not tonally consistent with the 4 Emperors arc, it is not threatening. It is pure comedy, plain and simple. Contrast that with Kaido's portrayal...

The double standards is off-the-charts level of cringe.

5. More sex crimes.... yay...

Violating your crewmates' trust and spying on them and others while naked is so cool and funny! AhAhAHaHaaHa

With Yamato in the story, I expect that she'll probably end up taking the #1 spot at some point.

How did Sanji assault Nami? And how was the bathhouse thing a sex crime? These terminologies are kind of strong. Its not like Sanji went full Roshi/Meliodas

Yeah this shit was weird as hell:

The “I am Oden” shit never made sense to me but this scene took it to a really weird place lol. Knowing Oda, he’ll eventually draw scenes like this between Yamato and Momo

With Yamato claiming that it’s fine since she is Momonosuke’s father
Isnt the whole perverted Momo thing.....kinda pedo ? Since hes a kid and shouldnt have thoughts like that.

@Den_Den_Mushi Well all the big names such as Linlin, Oden, Yamato and Sanji have been covered so I am going to for someone different.

O Kiku. I have zero respect for this character.

Initially introduced as a female character. Her portrayel was looking alright. She was the first to get her arse into gear to save Tama even if it meant doing so by herself and she even had a cool moment with challenging Urashima. Then it all goes downhill.

After challenging Urashima to his face she then freaks out and screams for help. What the actual feck? You launched yourself headfirst into this situation, the least you could do is get yourself out of it.

Luffy saves her useless arse anyway.

Then she has a mild panic attack when she has some weird moral dilemma about whether it is alright to cut down (not even necessarily kill) random arseholes that are trying to kill her and enslave Tama.

Why are you having this dilemma you utter sassenach? Were you or were you not introduced as a samurai? Did you or did you not intend to save Tama, a child, from slavery? What are you even doing here you useless donkey?

Zoro tells her to get her shit together. She immediately complies, not even overcoming her own doubts by herself.

What a stunningly useless character.

Fast forward to Udon and then we find out that she was a big name samurai and that she is in fact a he that identifies as a she.

Immediately after revealing that O Kiku actually has a dick under that kimono, Oda has Kiku's usefulness shoot up by 169% and suddenly a character that was concerned about cutting fools down and screaming "Kya" at the sight of Fat Bastard's Japanese cousin, is now threatening to "silence" masses of guards and throw hands with a feckin Yonko.

What in the everliving feck? Where the hell was this Kiku when a child needed saving from slavery and a sumo wrestler was about to kill her? :crazwhat:

Then we find out that Kiku was a Scabbard.

Good grief, all those years as a retainer to the greatest samurai to have ever lived after Ryuma, all those fights against the deplorables of Wano and the Beast Pirates but you still scream at the sight of a morbidly obese sumo wrestler? Right. :watchout:

Also, what did Kiku do after Oden's death for 20 years? Denjiro successfully infiltrated the enemy and kept Hiyori safe, Shutenmaru waged a two decade guerilla war, Kawamatsu gathered weapons before his imprisonment and the Dukes went to rule a country of warriors that would later form the bulk of the forces of the Wano liberation army.

Kiku was.... Working part time at a tea house?

This character is truly awful. Lel.

Oh please God no. :whitepress:

1) Pound still being alive. What an absolute shithouse decision by Oda this was. I won't comment any further on that ...

2) Pell still being alive. Completely ruined an otherwise perfect and dramatic sacrifice.

3) Yamato trying to be Oden for ... what reason actually? No sane person or even fangirl actually tries to commit full-blown identity theft. Harrassing a traumatized 8-year old boy and proclaiming to be his father was just the icing on the cake.
Oda sees this entire situation as a gag, but it's not funny at all. It's creepy as fuck.

4) Chopper (yes, that's it, that's the comment)

5) Everything that involved BM post-wedding. The second half of WCI was just terrible from a writing standpoint. Oda had some good ideas, but the execution was just bad. So many plot-conveniences, pacing issues and questionable/repetitive writing-decisions. Then he brought her to Wano ... and made a gag character out of her. That was just another bad decision imho, since it also affected the readers' stance on Kaido, a fellow Yonkou, and severely lowered the stakes because of that. Nobody felt any kind of threat from those two anymore.

6) Sanji turning into a full-blown creep/sexual predator post-skip. Could write a novel about that one, but I don't want to hurt the feelings of so many passionate Sanji fans here.
