In the anime he’s always shown as a direct equal to Yami, so I have some faith in him. Like a Kid to Luffy type thing

Yeah, that's why I would love him to show off but he became a little boring. All he does is "Death Scythe" and he never really shows any other emotions rather than being a cocky bastard. Even Yami has serious moments.
